It depends on what you do or where you go. What do you mean when you say rebuild? new pistons & rods valve job? Why dont you just go to a machine shop and ask them. I'm not trying to be rude but we are not doing the work. So go to the shop and get a estimate. Most shops want the motor pulled before they even work on it.

the car has a 137k miles on it.
i would like to keep it, it looks great, a few bumps but nothing serious.
I have never had an engine rebuild, so i'm not sure exactly what i'm looking for.
i just want that engine to sound and drive better.
perhaps from the sounds of it, it might be better to go to the junk yard and find a low milage engine and transplant it in.
i'm guessing 500-1000 for the engine, how much usually to install?
another 500 ish?
Thanks

Your car has a lot of miles, of course it's going to break. I haven't hit 40k yet (almost) but I'm not maintenence free. You can find a local DSM'er to do the job, or have it done at any mechanic. We don't have a Pep Boys so I don't know anything about it. My engine rebuild was 5k including labor ($1200) and the turbo and clutch at the dealership. Different engine, but you can search for yourself for the parts cost online or at a junk yard, salvage, or auction.. and estimate from there.

Just a curiosity question, how much did the transmission re-build cost you?
