Thank you in advance for any answer. I have a 4 cylinder 2.7 L 4wd ext cab 5 speed. When I try to start it I get a clicking, and it won't turn over. Now I'm not for sure if it's the starter or something wrong with the battery / alternator. I'd just like to have some idea before I take it anywhere. If it's the battery I can handle that easy enough.

Once again thank you.

If that battery is factory original, that makes it 7-8 years old. I would start there.

Ageed, go to Sears and get a new Die Hard battery. What kind of condition is the current battery in? Corrosion, dirty? Some batteries have an indicator that tells its condition such as good or needs replacement, it is usually a colored circle on the top of the battery. Also check your manual to see what it says about determining a dead battery.

try this test first. it's not always full proof. turn on your headlights, if they're nice and bright, try and start your truck. if your lights go completely dim to off its your battery or connections. if slightly dim it's your starter or connectors to the starter. if gives you a place to start.

most likely its the solenoid in your starter. sometimes if you tap the starter solenoid with a screwdriver or hammer you can get it to start. better to just replace the starter.

Sounds like the same problem I had. I took it to my local Toyota guru, and he told me that this was a common problem for Tacomas with 80-90k miles. His simple solution was to clean the starter contacts, which worked. He suggested eventually replacing the starter, although he thought I could get another 80k out of it.

I'd say the contacts are used up. Check out this repair pictorial... http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=166530&highlight=starter+contacts
