92 XLT 4x4 fuel problems

Engine is sparking fine, but the plugs are bone dry, engine light keeps coming on and it would sputter and die, but now it wont even start at all. I need to pull out the fuel filter and i need to know if the 92 ranger XLT 4.0 need a special tool to remove the filter like newer rangers?
Also, has anyone removed the fuel pump before, the ones inside the gas tank? if so, how hard was it?
And last, which valve should i use to check if there is any fuel pressure?
Thanks alot!

the "valve" is on the fuel rail which is part of the intake, will look almost like a tire valve, to air up tires, may be covered by a small black cap. WEAR safety glasses!!! you don't want gas in your eyes. you can usually hear the fuel pump relay kick on when you have the key in the "start" position, should make a ffffzzzzzzzzz sound and stop, if no noise, then fuel pump probably is bad

Alright, thanks! So i should turn the key on but not start the engine before i check the pressure? Because i pushed the valve in with the key off and nothing happened. I thought it might be my fuel pump, but when i turn the key on i can hear the fuel pump come on and hum for a few seconds then kick off.....i know im not getting any fuel i just dont know where the problem is. Could the pump be bad even though i can hear it humming? I pulled the fuel filter off and turned the key on so the pump came on but no gas came out of the gas line.....
Thanks again
Jim
