Sorry to say but the guy at the shop is wrong yur tranny is definetly shot :frown: . The same thing happened to me she wouldnt go in reverse at all i had to drive it back on the highway doing about 40 mph. Time for a new tranny the transmissions in the Lumina arent the best in the world now u gotta baby the new one once u get it.

I have a 1995 Lumina, and I had the exact same problem. After replacing my transmission, I tore apart my old one, and it turns out the only thing wrong with it is called the reverse reaction drum. There are geared teeth on both sides, and on one side, all of the teeth were stripped, and the teeth were rolling around in the tranny, this is why you might of heard a knocking sound when your engine is in park.
