Hi, all I am in need of help. My husband has a 94 ranger. 4.0, 5 speed 2 wheel drive. It got to where it wouldnt shift and started smoking up through the gear shift. We put in a new tranny, slave cylinder, master cylinder and clutch(clutch plate pressure plate and throw out berring.) It still wont go into gear. You have to turn it off and put it in first then start it. Then you have to force it into all the other gears.
The old tranny had two plugs going into either side of the top of the tranny. The reverse light and the shift indicator switch. The new tranny only had one plug. I was thinking that it was the reverse light but the lights dont come on when you hit reverse. If the other plug is for the shift indicator switch, would not having it plugged in keep it from shifting? If thats the problem how do we fix it? Did they give us the wrong tranny?
Thanks, trin

my transmission has started doing the same thing the past couple days. I've not been able to figure out the problem, but my transmission is not brand new.

If I find anything out, I'll let you know.

rangers are a pain in the arse to bleed the slave cylinders, sounds to me like it needs to be bled, especially if the trans was out, you can try pumping the clutch pedal a few hunderd times (honestly) or take it to a service shop and get it pressure bled. not sure about the two plugs you mentioned

Yeah, that's what I ended up having to do, my slave cylinder was completely empty. filled it up and pumped the pedal quite a few times, and finally it got back to working normally.
