Emissions pump?

My mechanic told my mom that her "emissions pump" was shot(whomever replaced it didn't replace a filter in the hose, it sucked up air and burned out). From what I've found on the internet so far, I beleive he was reffering to the A.I.R. pump? I am assuming this cuz it was making a horrible noise on start up for about a minute or so, and now her CEL is on. IT is a 2000 if that matters. I was wondering if anyone would know what the cheapest source of these would be? I've heard of people modding their intrigues before and assumed that an emissions thing like this may likely be taken off and sold for cheap? Or if there are any other places to look I would appriciate the input. Does anybody have one to sell?

Thanks for the space,

I was also wondering if, since my mom's emisisons pump is burnt out, I should even worry about replacing it? I live in SD, no emissions tests, but would that also hurt fuel mileage or not? If removal was possible without side effects like lower fuel mileage, would that darn sevice engine soon light still stay on all the time?

Thank you,

The AIR pump is used only to pump oxygen into the exhaust at startup to help reduce hydrocarbon emissions. It is common for people who hot rod cars to yank them, even though they have no power robbing effects that I know of, I think it is just to fit into some James Dean rebel thing although they will claim that it adds complexity to the engine bay. If you have emissions testing or not, this will likely not be cuahgt by the inspection sniffer test as they test cars hot -- although the code in the ECM will be caught (from what I recall on the 95 F-Body platform, the ECM was at least smart enough to figure out when the AIR pump was removed completely but could be fooled with a resistor as the ECM was only smart enough to check for continutity). I do not know enough about the chemical reaction inside a CAT to tell you if this would have any long term negative effects.

Some people claim that the AIR pump is one of the causes of the flickering lights problem seen on many GM cars. I'm curious to know if you have seen the flickering lights before/after this problem with the AIR pump.

Have you checked with your local parts store to see what a new one costs? The device is not very complex (some sort of fan iside a plastic housing) and might not be very expensive. Someone recently posted an internet site for cheap parts.

Well my mom told me that the pump cost 165 and the "hose kit" cost another 35. I haven't looked for them yet, this is what my mech told my mom. I'll see what I can find for prices. Do you know what kind/size of resister was used, incase I'm not able to find a cheap one?
Thank you,

You might search the auto wrecking yards. I bought one for $35.00

also check the fuse in the engine left side next to power steering pump, it is a 50 amp fuse it is in the smaller of the two fuse pannels. this often blows and will set a p410 error and turn on the service engine soon lite.

vcar - I am having the same problem, but I can not locate the air pump. could you help me out and share some info with me? Where is the air pump and how difficult is it to replace myself?

the pump is located in the left front fender under the air filter box; it has an intake and exhaust hose and a three wire plug. in the fender it is in front if the left wheel

Would anybody be able to tell me how to trick the ecu into believing that everything is working ok for the air pump system, if it has been removed. What size resistor I should put where to do this.
Thanks
