Starting my Aurora

Here's the deal, my 95 Aurora always starts, however 95% of the time it takes about anywhere from 2-4 seconds to actually start. When I turn the ignition it just continues to turn over until the vehicle starts. Only a handful of times it starts normally, sometimes when it is very cold outside or after I have been driving it for sometime. There does not seem to be any consistency in the situation. Can anyone help?

Weak spark from worn plugs and/or degrading wires usually result in slow starting. These engines are very tempermental to less than perfect spark cycle. Otherwise, it could be fuel metering related.

I just changed mine just a few months ago. I have the best set of plugs and wires I could find and I get that sometimes. Mine is probably because I need to replace my EGR valve. If the valve is sticking it could cause this.

Mine just started doing this, after four happy years of instant starts. So how do I change the EGR valve? Have new plugs and wires.

Just to add a little detail to the fuel metering possibility, Tooltimetech just posted this in the 'hard to start when cold out' thread: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=175110

It sounds like the fuel pressure is dropping off, it is either draining the fuel line back into the tank due to a defective fuel pump or into the engine through a defective fuel pressure regulator. Either one will cause extended crank time, a defective fuel pressure regulator may also cause extended crank when it is warm and a rough idle for the first few seconds the engine starts as it would have to burn the excess fuel that is not supposed to be there.

mine has done this for a while now but it really hasn't caused me serious problems so i dotn think it will affect anything, it just wont start as soon as you turn the key.

Don't know if you are still having the problem or not. I'm actually just looking in this forum to try to resolve the same problem. I think I've got it figured out. I took mine to the dealer who graciously charged me $350 to replace the fuel pressure regulator. The problem still existed but when I ranted and raved at the manager he showed me the part and said it was definately leaking. I have to admit, I don't get the surge at slow speeds that I used to. They wanted to do some more testing but I was reluctant to leave it for another, "who knows how many dollars". I talked to a couple of mechanic. And one offered two possible reasons. One was the fuel pressure regulator and the other is the fuel pump. He said sounds like the check valve is bad allowing the fuel to drain back to the tank. Test is to turn the key on but not to start. Wait 3 - 5 seconds for the fuel pump to pressure up the line the start. If it starts right up then it is the check valve. So, now I'm trying to find out if you can replace the check valve or do you have to replace the whole fuel pump?
