My sister has a 95 Neon and it has developed a massive oil leak.
She called after her engine oil light went on. She checked her oil and nothing registered on the dipstick. Had to add FOUR quarts to get the proper reading. While driving the car home (less than 5 miles) the engine oil light went on again and had to pull over to add more oil. The next day I jacked the car up, filled with oil and tried to find where the oil was coming from. The leak is coming from where the timing belt cover mates to the oil pump housing. Could this be coming from the front crankshaft seal, camshaft seal, or even head gasket? The car has 80,000 miles and the head gasket was already replaced once at 50,000 miles.

Any help?

My bet is the camshaft seal or crankshaft seal. Neon headgaskets usually blow at the back, driver's side of the block.

However, if the first headgasket was done poorly, it /could/ possibly be the culprit, because old pieces of gasket might not have been cleaned off, or the head is warped and wasn't checked. Good luck.

[EDIT] You're going to have to replace the timing belt, too. The motor oil will eventually destroy the belt, and when that breaks you've got real trouble

I think i posed a replie to this in the plymouth forum but mine did this not to long ago and it was the cam seal. It just rode out onto the cam. Replaced it myself but i am an A.S.E cert tech. Did not replace the timing belt, but i should have i know, dang thing is just to expencive right now.

The belt is definitely expensive. But having the belt break or slip is MORE expensive, since the Neon engine is an interference design.

sounds more like the rear main seal.. same thing just happened to my baby. Was about 350.00 to get repaired. Oil was leaking everywhere.. i'm still steam washing off the oil.... eek...

If it was the rear main, it would be at the rear of the engine. ;)

Though, it very well could be the crankshaft seal, like I said earlier. :)
