On my 1997 Ranger, I had to buy a special tool from AutoZone. It's basically a small little piece of plastic, which slips over the end of the filter, slides inside the hose, and unclips the filter from there. I made the mistake of trying to keep pulling on the filter, and it eventually put a hole in the hose, and cost me almost $600.00. Please be carefull.

Thanks for the response!
That is the way my 98 was also. The 01 I have now has some kind of plastic keepers. It has 3 connections. one green one yellow and one clear. the clear one I can see how to remove, but the other 2 hav me stumped.
