I have a 96 3.8 Thunderbird that will not pull when I press the pedal to the floor. It runs poorly before warming up and even after warm up has the same problem. I can gradually push the petal down at highway speeds and acceleration is fine, but if I push the pedal to the floor, it coughs and stutters. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Below is a list of the things that have been repaired and replaced:

Plugs
Plug wires

DAMN BOYS ..... it sounds like my bird and I have the 93' v-6 too, but the stumbling goes away after it warms up. Short of spending a fortune what can you do ?

im gonna change fuel filter today ($10 autozone) then if that doesnt work, im gonna change the o2 sensors, there are 2 on the 93 v6. There $42 (each at autozone). That'll be next week. I'll let ya know how it goes! If not that, then maybe injectors and tps.

changed fuel filter, same results. autozone dude (who has a 97 v8) told me that the o2 sensors shouldnt be causing MY loss in power, toild me to go to an autozone in the next city, they have a machine to check the modulator (which is located near the distributor or near the coil, mine was beside coil) and to check the coil, to see if they are the culprit b4 i spend $80. If i need to replace the modulator, its only 50 or 60, cant rem. i'll let ya'll know what i find out

i went to coolcats.com, and figured out that this all might be caused by a fuel pump going bad. So im gonna check the fuel pressure, if thats it, i'll change the pump and should be good to go. If not f.p, then im gonna give in and have a whole computer diagnostics thing done for like $45, just to tell me whats wrong :eek7: oh well, i'll let ya know what i find out.

Hey ... that would be great if we could all find out what the hell causes all the stumbling without having to pay the piper, but at your expense. HA !
NO ... seriously, I really appreciate you keeping me in the loop with the same problem. Thanks !

By the way .. love the "fordforlife" ID, as that how I am. FORD

i found an auto place down here that checked fuel pressure for free (since i didnt have a coll lil $40 tool that does it) and found out that when i got on it heavy, my fuel psi was dropping to 12 psi, so i changed the fuel pump out myself (beats the 100-150 labor costs) and the car runs great. It cost me about 80. fuel pump was 55, strainer was 8, new fuel filter 10. then tax. They said to change the fuel filter out after you run it for a few mins, maybe around the block, pick up any loose stuff you stirred up in the tank, then change. I went ahead and changed o2 sensors since i had some extra cash. It took me about 1/2 a day, i took my time, being my first time. I just used a floor jack, jack stands and basic craftsman tool set. I didnt need a special tool for the filter either, just popped it off with screwdriver. Also, the website suggests removing ttank completly, however, i just tilted the front down enough to get pump out of tank, and it worked fine. I left the vent hoses and filler hose in back of tank (rear of car) connected. I replaced the baffle with a hp 5/16" hose with hose clamps. That was all included with pump though. This website explains it very well with great pics. http://www.mn12performance.com/mn12parts/fuel-pump/fpk-install/fuel-pump-kit-install.htm

goodluck if you do it yourself, and remember, dont blow urself up:biggrin: if you have ne questions, i'll try my best to help!
