Subwoofers and Amps...READ!Koojo 04-18-2001, 07:37 PM I am planning on getting my first sub and amp system soon, and I have my eyes on this: Sony Xplod XM-1502SX 760w amp. 3 MTX Thunder 6000 subs 1500w Max in a sealed box The subs I saw at Circuit City, and it was on sale for $340 for the 3 subs and the box that came with it. Looks very nice. It would cost over $600 if I would buy it all seperate (stupid idea). Any opinions on this setup? The guy said that the box should take up most of the width, but should leave some room in the front. NismoG20 04-18-2001, 08:19 PM if i were u i would get thouse subs but i would definatly look for a different amp... i am very happy with my kenwood... but i have heard alot of bad things about sony and anyone at my school that gets one is shuned..haha dude that aint a bad deal with the subs though... are u gonna install this ureself or let circuit city? Koojo 04-18-2001, 09:18 PM The guy at circut city was pretty cool, he told me that all of the sony amps werent worth it, but the new one that came out, the 760w that i was talking about was pretty nice. He also showed me an MTX amp, but he said the new sony is better than that. ya its a pretty nice deal for the subs, but he said that they only had one left, and its the one on the shelf. he said they are getting rid of that style and getting new ones in, so i was like damn, those were nice. the new ones are probably gonna be expensive. he said they take 55 bucks for installation plus the wires and all that crap, so i think its worth it. better than having myself installing it, ill probably blow something. so thats what it looks like. I have to check some other stores out though too b-b00gie 04-18-2001, 11:56 PM not to plug any other forums.. you know my loyalty here lol.. but www.sounddomain.com has huge forums which are very useful =) SkylinesKillAll 04-19-2001, 12:07 AM id say definatley go with the mtx subs, hell ive got 4 in my trunk, but id definatley look for another amp. definatley find one thats 1 ohm stable and atleast 1000 watts. the subs sound better with more power, well atleast mine do :D Koojo 04-19-2001, 08:54 AM whats so bad about that new sony amp that i was talking about? anyone know of a good amp that costs around $200 or so? I dont want to spend way too much money on this. thanks NismoG20 04-19-2001, 12:08 PM my kenwood wasnt too much more than 200 and its 600 watts if u bridge it... but 55 on install doesnt seem too bad... ive known how to do systems since i was like 10 so i had no problem in the 2 cars ive bad... how much are they asking for this new sony amp?? Nismoboy1 04-19-2001, 12:36 PM Not dissing on Circuit City stuff and I'm not too fond of Sony or MTX car audio stuff either, sorry, to each his own...but I've always had good experiences with Tweeter Home/Auto Entertainment. If it were me I'd prolly get a few JL subs and a Kenwood or Xtant amp. but thats just me :) check out www.tweeter.com they got pretty good prices there, and you can always deal with these guys to get a lower price. I'm sure you can find something nice there, just my opinion, good luck :alien: Koojo 04-19-2001, 02:20 PM the new sony amp was $200. he said that all the other amps sony ams were shit and cant be used with powerful subs, but he said the new ones are pretty good, and people said they are good too. I dunno I never actually used it. It has a crossover and all inside it already, so i dont need a seperate equilizer and stuff. Its 760w, so thats pretty good. SkylinesKillAll 04-20-2001, 12:22 AM ok first of all tweeter is a total fucking rip off. they wanted to charge me $6 a foot for 2 gauge power cable so i told the guy to lick my balls and i walked out. if u can find a little shop in ur town then go there they give good deals. Nismoboy1 04-20-2001, 10:28 AM damn, sorry about your experience with Tweeter, but I've always dealt with them and they always hook me up. I guess because I went there so much I got to know them pretty well :D Anyways if Tweeter is not in your book than I would go to a local shop also, you can get pretty good deals from them also. Good luck. NismoG20 04-20-2001, 12:39 PM yeah i always have good hook ups at hi-fi buys which is the tweater company... like if i dont have enough money for somehthing the dude gives me somthing for free... he gave me all my harnasses and wires and conectors for free Koojo 04-20-2001, 06:34 PM how expensive are the wires to install an amp and a sub for our car? the guy at circuit city said $55 + the wiring. One of my friends said his came up a total of $240 for installation, and he had an amp and like 2 subs. On average, how much is it? SkylinesKillAll 04-21-2001, 12:25 AM i spent jus over $100 for all the wire needed to hook up an amp 4 subs and a crossover. this included 2 gauge power cable 15ft. anbout 12ft of 8 gauge speaker cable. plus the remote cable rcas, distributon block, the fuse thing for the front, and the clamps needed for the power cable. a 4 gauge amp kit at citcut city cost $100 so i got off really good considering i got 2 gauge plus the block fuses and wire for the crossover. jus look for little shops and be really friendly and talk with the guys. im sure theyll hook u up nicely. good luck :D Koojo 04-22-2001, 09:49 PM Ya i but i doubt they will have those subs there when im actually gonna be looking for subs to buy. he said he only had one mtx left, and will probably gonna get a different model, more expensive. so damn, that would suck. cause 340 aint to bad for 1500w of mtx power huh. SkylinesKillAll 04-23-2001, 03:55 PM no that proice is definatly good for the subs jus look around for another amp. i know the circut city in my area doesnt carry too many brands so if thats the case where u live too ask around about amps and find one with high watts that will power the subs nicely. Koojo 04-23-2001, 03:59 PM About how much power does an amp has to have to work well with the subs? If you get like a 500w sub, how much power does the amp have. How about for the 1500w subs? SkylinesKillAll 04-23-2001, 04:06 PM it depends on whether or not you talking about rms power or peak power unite@af 04-23-2001, 07:34 PM Im not fond of Sony or MTX. Sony just doesnt have their stuff togther yet and I dont think that MTX makes the best subs. I like Rockford Fosgate for subs and amps. Clarion is my choice for deck. Alpine decks are getting to be top quality also. Have fun Koojo 04-23-2001, 07:36 PM Whats the difference between rms and peak? heheh sorry im kinda new at this. :monkeypis mattG20 04-23-2001, 11:29 PM rms is the amount of continuous power the speaker can handle. peak is the amount of power the speaker can handle during a brief musical burst. I believe each mtx sub can handle 250watts rms and 500 peak. They get the 1500watts from adding up the peak power of all the speakers. Koojo 04-24-2001, 12:37 AM Would I need an amp that has about the same power as the rms, or peak power? Also.. Is 750rms and 1500 peak good for around 340? (includes the box) Nismoboy1 04-24-2001, 10:33 AM I'm sorry, correct me if I'm wrong, but peak power to me doesn't mean jack, from what i've seen it's just a number they throw out there to attract people, RMS is where it's at. RMS is it's true power output or power handling. But then again who knows if RMS is just a number they throw out also, you can't really tell without the special tools to measure it. But yeah I think if you had to know, I would look at the RMS. I'd say, get a amp that has a good reputation in the car audio industry that has a good power output (rms) and won't overpower your subs, and blow them, but then again thats what the gain knobs are for lol Xtant, Alpine, Kenwood are all good car audio companies for amps. Sony to me, and just like Unite@af said, it's just not all their. For subs, go with JL or Eclipse. Remember this is just my opinion, don't take it to heart. For more info check out www.carreview.com they got reviews on different car audio products there, maybe that can help you out a little. Good luck. SkylinesKillAll 04-24-2001, 02:23 PM yeah u gotta look at rms b/c if u put 1500 watts into em continusly u will kill ur subs. personally i love mtx subs. the hit alot harder then my friends jls and rockfords. if rms power is 750 then get an amp that does at least 700. im assuming that all the subs are connected into on terminal cap right? Koojo 04-24-2001, 02:42 PM Whats a terminal cap? Its not the plastic cap that goes in the middle of some subs is it? SkylinesKillAll 04-24-2001, 03:50 PM its on the back of the box its a little round plastic thing with a red and a black screw or clip, its where u attach the amp wires. the wirs from the subs go into the back of it. Koojo 04-24-2001, 06:04 PM So wouldnt all the subs have a terminal cap then? SkylinesKillAll 04-24-2001, 08:05 PM no b/c if u take all the positive wires, and braid em together u can put em into one positive hole. same with the negatives so there could be either 3 or 1 on that box Koojo 04-24-2001, 11:53 PM Oh i dunno then, im not gonna be installing it though. Ill just have them worry about it. SkylinesKillAll 04-25-2001, 05:37 PM yeah but u need to know so u know what kinda amp and how many watts the amp will have. Koojo 04-25-2001, 09:55 PM Hmmmmm, what does bridged mean, and what effect doe it have on ohms? SkylinesKillAll 04-25-2001, 11:19 PM i cant really explain bridged i wish i could draw a pic and show u its kinda tricky. its kinda like takin the poitive and negative from different subs and connectin em. im not really sure on this. all i know is the more u bridge it the lower the ohms go. so u have to bridge it to the the peak power out of the amp. u can also wire them in parallel which i also cant really explain. maybe someone knows better than i do. also instead of writin back and forth on this thng where its takin days to talk jus im on AIM - BmXr23. itll be much faster. im sure we couldve been through this all already. Nismoboy1 04-26-2001, 11:19 AM Bridging is kinda tricky like Skyline said. kinda hard to explain with just text...lets see...from what I know when you bridge speakers together the basic outcome of this is to run all your subs in mono to which then your amp is also run in mono. Basically running all the positive terminals together and like-wise with the negatives. Some companies even make mono (sub only) amps. But for instance with a 2-channel amp, to run this bridged it would have to have the ability run bridged. Not all amps have the ability to be bridged. If it is able to be bridged, then the speaker outputs would show a diagram right on the amp on which speaker outputs to use (usually right channel positive and left channel negative) therefore the wattage output of the amp is almost doubled. For instance a 100w x 2-ch @ 4ohms amp, bridged would probably be around 175w x 1-ch @ 2 ohms. Technically. But it goes deeper. Now this is where speakers come in say for instance you have 2 4ohm subs, bridged mono it drop to 2 ohms. and say you had 3 4 ohms subs it would drop to 1.3 ohms. Basically how many ohms you start with divided by the amount of speakers. Ok now to piece it all together...whew...let me think for a sec here...ok...say you had a 100W x 2-ch @ 4 ohm amp(bridgeable) and you had 3 4ohm subs. the amp bridged would be around 175W x 1 @ 2 ohms. but since you have 3 4 ohm subs, your system would be running in 1.3 ohms which is lower than 2 ohms which means more power is needed. That same amp would probably almost double the power output @ 1.3 ohms. I'd say around 275w-300w x 1-ch @ 1.3 ohms. But you have to have an amp that is at least 1 ohm stable to support this. So basically when you bridging your running your system in mono all that other crap that I stated is just to make sure its safe to do it and if it is possible to do it. thats all. and good luck. Feel free to correct me if any of its wrong. thanx. More info at www.sounddomain.com & www.carreview.com Koojo 04-26-2001, 03:28 PM Yesterday I went to a few car audio stores, and they all had stuff from different companies. I want to know your opinion on what ones are better. I saw: JL Audio subs and amps. (the sales guy said that they were good at playing things like rap, but are better for regular less-beat music) Rockford subs and amps. (he said these were used to give more base for things like rap and more upbeat music.) Alpine subs and amps. (the amps were exensive!) MTX subs and amps. (pretty cheap price) Kenwood amp. (I think it was 600w peek for $200 at sears.) Sony Xplod amp (760w peek at $200) SkylinesKillAll 04-26-2001, 07:04 PM ok first of all i dont think any subs were meant for any kind of music. they are jus made for bass. jl r really good. and if u look around u can find em dirt cheap.also if you look on www.thezeb.com they have everytihng cheap. the 3 mtxs u want only go for 265 Koojo 04-26-2001, 10:11 PM I am still a little confused on the power needed from the amp. Lets say I get one 12" sub that throws out about 500w RMS. How much power (RMS) would the amp have to have? Can the amp be lower, like 350w for example, or does it have to be more than the subs? I like the Audiobahn ALUM12 Sound Q Series that cost $124.88 at www.thezeb.com, and have "Power Handling: 1000 Watts R.M.S. " What about the amp then? Would I have to spend a lot of money to buy an amp thats over 1000 Watts RMS? Thanks Koojo 04-26-2001, 10:16 PM Also another question about power of subs. Audiobahn ALUM12" subs output 1000w RMS. So it would take about 4 other subs that have 250w RMS, to sounds like the Audiobahn ALUM12? What if someone got like two 15" subs that together make 900rms, would the bass sound worse on those two rather than on the Audiobahn ALUM12? SkylinesKillAll 04-27-2001, 11:52 PM if u get an amp with less power than the subs can take rms the subs wont sound as good as if u got an amp that has the right power. i got a 1200 watt amp for $110 and i love it. ive never had a prom with it and it powers 4 subs nicely. now about the sound quality i belive the one sub with more power going to it will have better sound quality but not more bass assuming both are getting the correct power. it all depends on how much power they are getting. Koojo 04-28-2001, 11:09 PM So you think it would be better to put in like 2 10's that make 500w rms for example, rather than one 10 that can make 500w rms? They would both be using the same amp with the same power. SkylinesKillAll 04-29-2001, 12:10 AM the 1 10 will sound cleaner but the 2 10s will be louder. dblthebass 01-12-2005, 04:02 PM i would go with the audiobahn 1600w amp (A8002T), it is and intake series which means it has and internal cooling fan, you can get it off ebay brand new in the box for about $158 after shipping vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
