no fuel, no spark...need help with diagnosisv8killer 01-07-2004, 04:33 PM Hey guys, I have a 1998 Eclipse GS-T. Last week, the balance shaft belt broke and damaged the crank position sensor. I replaced the belt and the sensor and the car will not start. Ever since the belt broke, the fuel pump does not come when you turn the key to the "ON" position. 1. the pump works fine (I applied 12V to it) 2. the ASD (MFI relay is good) 3. the fuel pump relay is good 4. all fuses are good 5. the ignition switch is good in all positions 6. when I turn the key to the "ON" position, the ASD/MFI relay clicks on, but the fuel pump relay DOES NOT click on 7. the cam angle sensor is good 8. the crank position sensor is good I think the ECU, for some reason, is not telling the fuel relay to come on. This leads me to believe that the ECU has gone bad or possibly to the relay that controls the ECU (if there is one). Does anyone know where the ECU relay is located on a 1998 GS-T? Can anyone add to my diagnosis here? And/or the crank angle sensor connector. You should here some clicks and the pump come on for a half second. Let us know how that turns out. v8killer 01-07-2004, 07:44 PM Okay, I will try that. Thanks a million, Jay Whitely Tampa, FL kjewer1 01-08-2004, 09:59 AM This will tell you if the pump/relay/ecu stuff all works. I went through this when my 1g CAS busted. The probelm here is that you are still on 2g sensors. The 1g combines both together. So I dont know on my car if it was the cam or crank sensor making the pump come on for that half second. But if you get it on either sensor, I would say at least the pump works and is being told to work. You really need to know if the pump comes on while cranking, which is hard to tell. But this is a start. There are many things that could cause your car to not start based on your original post, so we have to start the process of elimination. ;) v8killer 01-10-2004, 05:48 PM Okay, here is the latest. I printed up a wiring diagram from my local Mitsubishi dealer. I connected 12V to the fuel pump check connector under the hood on the firewall and the pump DOES come on. As for the fuel pump relay, two of the wires (black/white) are supposed have 12V with the key ON. These wires test good. The black/blue wire, which goes directly from the relay to the fuel pump is good. I tested for continuity and there are no breaks in the wiring. There is also a white/red wire that goes from the ECU to the fuel pump relay. This wire is supposed to give a ground signal to the ECU for a few seconds when the key is ON and also when cranking/running. I am not getting this much needed ground signal from the ECU at all. Here is my theory. The car originally broke down as a result of the balance shaft belt breaking. This caused the crank position sensor to get crushed and mangled up very badly. I replaced the balancer belt, timing belt (while I was in there), and the crank position sensor. The car will still not start and the fuel pump does not come on when the key is ON or while cranking. Also, I do not have spark. I think the crushed sensor may caused a short (the wires/contacts were twisted up), which did something to mess up the ECU. That is the only way that I can link the broken balancer belt to a not getting correct ECU output signals. I think I might send the ECU out to have it tested. Any thoughts?
