What's wrong with my Ranger?

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger. 6 cyl Automatic trans. 60,000 miles. No problems with it before.

I drove it about a week ago and it was fine.

Got in and started it today. The ABS light came on. I thought crap but I still can drive it because the brakes still work. I started to drive it and I noticed the speedometer was not working. Then when it shifted from first into second it shifted really hard and then the service engine light came on and the OD off light started blinking. I just parked it.

Someone suggested replacing the speed sensor on the rear diff.

I did this ands the check engine light went off and the ABS light went off but the speedometer did not work and the transmission still is messed up. I tried disconecting the battery for 20 minutes but no help.

What is wrong now?

Could be the speed sensor in the rear of the tranny.

No

Where is the sensor in the tranny located? Will that fix it?

Do you have a 4x4? Check the speedo hook up that goes into the tranny, it could have broke, and if you have 4x4 it hooks up to the t case.

Dude I had the exact same thing happen to me. One minute my truck was fine and the next it was lights and brakes and tranny all failing. It was just like what you described. I stopped when I realized the speedometer wasn't working and knew it had to be an electrical problem. It turned out that it was the "speed control sensor". Beware though the malfunction caused my trannny to burn up and had to have it rebuilt. Have been having problems with my truck ever since. Though I feel somewhat fortunate that my truck lasted for 120,000 miles and 4 years. Good luck! This may be the last ford I ever buy.

This problem started happening to me too. I drive a 1999 Ranger, 2WD standard transmission.

Starting yesterday my ABS light was on. Then I noticed my speedometer was not working. It turns out the speedometer indicates 0 unitl I get to 35mph, then it seems to indicate fine. Hanes manual is all screwed up.

I do not have a speedometer cable that connects to my transmission like the hanes manual says. I figure the speed comes form the speed sensor for RABS on the rear differential. Does anyone know if this is true?

I suppose that my transmission will not get screwed up because it is a manual and is not shifted on any sensor that might be bad.

I thought about changing the speed sensor in the rear differential, but I am not sure thats the problem. Did anyone ever find a solution to this problem.

I'm no expert, but I have a 99 as well and mine abs light came on when my brakes need to be replaced. You might want to check that.

I had the same problem and I changed the speed sensor on top of the differential and everyting came back on. Now the speedometer is working again, check engine light went off and Abs light went off! So change the speedsensor on top of the rear differential, it worked for me!

 hahahaha dont you just love it when a fucking mitsubishi owner posts this shit. sorry son, but there are a few 4 letter words that describe youre car. a few of them being slow, shit, ghey, ugly, crap, puny, fake, want more? although the most common word used to describe an eclipse is a 3 letter word; "WHY". untill you drive a Cadillac, or have a useful suggestion pertaining to the topic in discussion, you need to shut youre mouth, youre ass, and whatever else youre talking out of.

Don't forget that Mitsubishi designed one of the most failure-prone engines of all time (and sold it to Chrysler to put in their Dodge Intrepids):

Quoted from other post on the net:
"Mitsusbushi the engine people who designed this engine sent me the facts about this engine! ( In Japenese)

All this happens is this order.

1) The oil circulation is poor and the oil starts frying. Regualar oil can not take 300+ degrees.
2) The frying oil produces sludge.Which accumalates no matter how many times you change the oil. ( You will see sludge in oil fill cap)
3) The sludge further stops the oil circulation and the car runs Hot.( Oil smells like diesel fuel).
4) The engine Coolant/water vaporizes forming a air bubble on the top of the engine by the bleed valve.
5) The water stops circulating causing No heat blowing and the Head expands causing head gasket leaking.
6)Water bubbles/foam leak & build's up in the engine causing poor lubrication of the Timing Chain & Rod bearings.
7) Engine starts ticking & knocking.( rod bearing, timing chain, etc.)
8 Engine freezes up or dies.
YES, THIS IS A VERY POOR ENGINE."

My brother's 1999 2.5L automatic has the same problems listed in the original post. He put a new speed sensor in the differential and check engine/ABS lights went off but engine still having problems shifting to second and won't shift to third. Does he have to clear codes or anything like that before it will work? We tried disconnecting the battery. Also was going to replace sensor on transmission but didn't see one.

Thanks to the people that gave me an idea about the sensor on the diferential. I replaced it and now my truck is working properly again

Consider this your one and only moderator's warning. Digging up old threads to insult people who're only playing around is not a way to start your tenure at AF.

I suggest cleaning up your language, learning some grammar, and for god's sake pick up an Atlas and get some geography because Mitsubishi's are built in Japan; not China.
