Freeze-out Plug 1997 Olds Cutlass Suprememrmarv1114 01-03-2004, 03:31 PM I have been experiencing coolant leakage for the past several months on my Cutlass. I've replaced the hoses and have been under, on, and actually in the engine compartment and cannot locate where the coolant is coming from. The coolant is most noticeable on the transmission pan surface and of course on the garage floor. Someone suggested it might be a freeze-out plug. Being a weekend "mechanic" I have no idea as to what a freeze-out plug is, other than it's a safety mechanism for the coolant. Could someone tell me what, and where it actually is and if it might be an issue that I might want to tackle (fix myself). I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Marv boxeroo 01-08-2004, 03:50 PM I will take a wild guess that it is the lower intake manifold gasket which is leaking. I have a 96 with the 3100 engine, and had it repaired at the dealership for $850- included an oil change/thermostat/coolant power flush. 85k miles. What may look like oil, but is sludged up coolant appears on the front and back of the engine and can drip down. Mine probably started going bad and leaking about a year ago or more. This is a common problem on the 3100, do a search on google or on this board and you will get many things to read. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
