I am looking at a 1995 GMC Turbo Diesel 2500 2X4. It is automatic. I do not know what motor it has in it. What should I look at when I check the truck out? I has 126k miles on it. How many more miles should I be able to get out of this truck, with good care?

Thanks.

I'm on here trying to find threads about these '95 turbodiesels......I'm having the same problem as many others with these engines.....random stalling hot or cold...runs fine for a few hours/days, then shuts off as though the key was switched off....beware as I think this is common with the mid-nineties chevy diesels......

Personally I would stay away from the 6.5 turbo deisel there have just been to many horror stories about them. They are prone to cracking heads and eating injector pumps amunst other things. Although I suspect alot of these problems have stemed from lack of maintenance there is no doubt that these engines aren't nearly as heavy duty as the powerstoke and cummings alternatives. It pains me to say this as I am a chev fan but its just the way it is

Thanks Guys,

I am getting the message. I looked at a 92 3500 6 cyl Dodge Cummings TD. Nice. Had power, and was solid. over 300k miles on it though. Humm.

I'm a HUGE chevy fan and i'm convinced that the mid 90's chevy diesel is perhaps the worst most unreliable full size truck ever made, my grandpa had one to pull his 5th wheel with and he along with several other chevy diesels i knew about had constant problems and got no power out of them. my dad's got a 91 dodge 350 with a cummins, we put a full Banks kit on it and that thing is a serious machine! we use it every day as a service truck, weighs 10,000lbs total with all the tools and equipment on it...we towed a tractor on a trailer from minnesota to california with a total weight of 20,500lbs and i don't know how many other trailers we passed going up grades.
if you want something reliable to tow with get an old cummins. the only problem we've had is when we put the intercooler on our '91, the stock radiator wasn't able to do the job...talk to your local diesel perf shop or radiator shop. also look up Banks, they are by far the leaders in diesel upgrades.
