Hello,

I have a 1991 Buick Century, 3.1L, with a problem with the instrument lamps fuse... It goes out every time I turn on the headlights but everything else still work well... I have to travel during the night frecuently and I can`t see the speedometer or fuel indicator, so I have to turn on interior lights several times while I`m driving to check them.

Can somebody tell me where can I obtain a wire diagram of the instrument lamps or an advise about the problem?

Many Thanks.

Do you mean "Instrument Panel"?... if it so, yes, the IP fuse (5 Amp) blows out everytime I turn on the headlights. Any advise?

Many Thanks.

You have a shorted wire somewhere. The easiest and best thing to do is take it to a good honest shop and have them chase the wires. Wiring problems are one of the hardest things to find unless you have alot of time I would suggest a shop doing this.

One thing I would reccomend to you first is to see what other systems you lose with the blown fuse and look at them. Like does your cigar lighter work, interior lights and so on. let me know if antything else doesn't work.

Only the lamps of instrument panel, A/C control panel and front door panel donīt work with this blown fuse. The interior lights and cigar lighter are still working. Iīm trying to find the short by myself taking advantage of this holidays, but itīs very difficult without a wire diagram and the other problem is I donīt have a shop reliable...!

Some food for thought... Try turning off the instrument lights, then turning the rheostat all the way down, dimming the lights all the way. Then, try a 10 amp fuse. Slowly turn the lights up, noting whether the fuse blows. 5 amps seems a little low for a rating since typically, each bulb will draw about .5 amps or more at turn on. gradually raising the intensity will allow the fuse to blow without burning anything out and may allow the careful observer to note where to go next. This may be observed as a certain area of the illumination not brightening properly, like the radio, for example. Do not go above 10 amps, a short will blow the 10 amp as well. Ray
