Windshield wipers don't return to hiden position

Does anyone know why, when the wipers are turned off, they move to the fully open position, instead of going to their hiden position, at the base of the windshield.

Did you use your wipers when they were frozen to the windshield? If you did then chances are either you bent the park switch or one of the linkages.

Thats the best I can do without knowing what year, make, or model van you have.

Thank you for replying. The van is a 2000 model year, Pontiac Montana, with a 3.4l engine, AC, traction control, power sliding door. It has approximately 60,000 km on it, and was purchased used. I so not know if the wipers were activated when they were frozen, or not. This has not been done since I have had the van, and they did seem to work fine, up until recently.

I have been able to get the wipers to return to the hiden position after the van has warmed up, and the wipers are turned on, and off, a few times. ( I suspect, following an email from another person with the same problem, that the "home" switch is being made, intermittently.)

Any recommendations on how to re-adjust, or repair this problem?

You have a mechanical park switch which is part of the wiper crank arm. Either the crank arm is bad, out of adjustment, or the crank arm tab is bent.

Install the crank arm on the wiper motor.
Turn the ignition switch to the ACCY position.
Set the wiper switch to PULSE position. The wiper motor should be operating.
Turn the ignition switch to OFF when the wiper motor is in the innerwipe position.

Important
Do not rotate the wiper motor shaft during the installation of the crank arm.

Install the crank arm on the wiper motor while maintaining a 4-8 mm (0.157- 0.315 in) gap between the V-grove in the wiper motor crank arm and the tab.
Install the screw. Tighten
Tighten the screw to 14-17 N·m (124-150 lb in).

Install the crank arm cover and seal.

Check the gap between the crank arm and tab. If the gap is not 4-8 mm (0.157- 0.315 in), remove the crank arm and repeat installation steps.
Install the drive link on the crank arm.
Tighten the two drive link screws. Tighten
Tighten the two screws to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

Install the wiper system module cover.
Operate the wipers and check for proper operation.

Thank you very much for these instructions. It works.

It is amazing how many other Montanas I have seen driving around with the wipers stuck on the windshield.

Thank you, again.

I have to add that I had the problem return, but this time, I oiled the plate that slides, and puts the wipers in park, or in the active position. Since oiling this mechanism, there have not been any issues.

I know this is an old thread but does anyone have pictures of what is what or of the thing taken apart? Mine have now started to act up, no way could I get them to park yesterday, they would go down to the wait spot and that is it. Started the van today and they parked, they are also running slow. I got some brake cleaner and cleaned it all up on the under the plastic cover, and sprayed it with jigilou lubricant, sometimes it parks, most times it doesn't, or only starts to park, I am going to put some synthetic grease on it all and see if that helps but not sure what all needs to be greased. An diagram or pictures of what is what would be greatly appreciated.
