Hi.
I was wondering about the reliability of a 3rd gen RX7 and what could be done to it for it to be more reliable. And if it'd be a good idea or not to use one as a daily driver.

Thanks for the help.

they are fine as daily drivers, wish I could drive one daily :loser: they can be pretty reliable as long as they are takin care of, sometimes at 100,000 miles they have problems if they haven't been cared for well or have been run hard alot but most the time they are fine... rebuild it and it will be more reliable, as long as you don't do anything extreme in the process

From Pettit racings website.

The Following recommendations are intended to keep your car out of the shop and on your favorite road

#1. Always keep up with routine maintenance schedules as outlined in the owner's manual

#2. Upgrade your chassis and engine grounding points. (FREE kit with your first order.)

#3. Replace cooling system plastic air separator (A.S.T), well known for splitting in half with no warning causing massive coolant loss and overheating. Our very popular aluminum upgrade units are always in stock.

#4. Replace that dirty fuel filter!!! Countless premature engine failures are caused by a dirty fuel filter. Don't let this happen to you. Poor fuel quality also contributes to engine failures ALWAYS USE PREMIUM FUEL!!!

#5. Install a turbo boost gauge! This is the only way to be sure the turbos are working properly. We produce several kits. All are easy to install, and come pre-wired with detailed instructions.

#6. Use fuel lubricant. This has been proven to extend engine life at least 30%. See Protek-R for more information.

#7. Get a fire extinguisher!!! A must have for any vehicle...that way you will never need it! Our auto fire extinguisher installs in minutes and looks cool, too

My dad daily drives his 93 Base. First he took it to Pettit and did all the reliability upgrades along with a couple of go fast parts. :)

He drives about 70 miles round trip every day with it. I cannot tell you how many people try to race him. He calls me once a week to tell me about his latest kill. Most memorable a late 90's Cobra Mustang and a BMW Z-3 roadster. Z-3 owner was pissed Mustang owner talked his ear off at the next light and wanted to pull over to see the car up close.

BTW - He leaves his 2000 C-5 vert at home because his 7 is more fun to drive.

I sponsored and organized the BBQ. ;)

I am puting together a Rotary only Autocross Racing school in the Spring too.

Pettit = 3rd gen RX-7's

He is also famous for doing 3 rotor engine swaps. They are works of art. Usually end up with 550 HP.

My Fd powered FC is there getting street ported right now I should be picking it up next week. God, I miss it.

My car is in their right now. Its got a big No Postons.com banner on the front windshield.

Kandy is driving the RX-8. I am going to beg her to let me drive it next time I am there. Might cut a deal and let her drive my Mini.

Wiat until you see what they do to the RX-8. Rumors of forced induction in the works.

where is the shop anyways? and hoe much did it cost to drop a 3 rotor in your FC? or how much would just the motor cost to drop in since I don't know if you did anything to it when you dropped it in... I figure about the price of just buying an FD

He doesnt have a 3-rotor in his FC. An REW is an FD motor. The RE is a cosmo motor.

alright but he did say they are famous for 3 rotor engine swaps, so how much are they? just out of curiosity, not that I can afford one or anything haha

what color is it? last friday I saw a FC in their bay can't recall what color it was maybe black lol. That rx8 sounds pretty badass, they must have really opened up the exhaust on it cause it was loud a few times. What happened to the limo?

My FC is probably the only one there. Yes its black I brought it in on a car trailer last week.

I might drive down tomarrow at about noon to see my engine apart and let Kandy drive my Mini. If she lets me drive the 8. She says its slow. But she drives 500 HP cars all the time.

Soyo - a full 3 rotor FD sells for about 90K. But a lot more is done that just dropping an engine in.

I would imagine an FC swap would run you about 30K there. Keep in mind they get the engines from Japan and tear them down and rebuild them always. No engine goes into their cars used. It is always rebuild to their specs.

My rebuild / Street port / 3mm seals is costing me in the 5K neighborhood. You want the best you have to pay for it. When he is done w/ my car 320rwhp will seem like nothing.
