i was thinking i could just take of the exterior of the door and try to flatten it...are there any alternate options?

Is the paint cracked or metal creased?

I'd say take it to a paintless dent repair place, let them give you an opinion. They charge minimal amounts & do amazing work.

Just use a toilet plunger and it will pop right out.
