I have one of those intermittant problems. Sometimes when I start my Grand am it will "over rev" and die. It normally starts immediately after though. It seems that it does this more in the winter months, or at least it appears to be. It doesn't do this all the time.

Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated. The engine is a 3100 series.
Thank you

Cold Start will make your car idle higher to warm the engine quicker. Does it make a popping noise at the front of the engine when it starts and stops?

No popping noise that I hear.

When it revs high is the sign that it is going to shut down right away also. The other times when it starts and runs correctly it doesn't over rev.

I am on my way to Autozone to see if the computer is throwing out any codes.

The car has 180,000 miles on it, in case that helps.

As an update, Autozone could not read my computer because it said that the port was not working. Anyone ever have that happen to them? I looked at the connector and can't find any wires off.
They also recommended that I clean the Idle air control valve. When I removed it there was a lot of carbon buildup. I cleaned both the sensor and port and reinstalled. We will see how that works.

If anyone has any other ideas to try, please feel free to let me know. Thanks.
