hi........ on my recent trip to japan
i came apon a bunch of street racers at a street meet.
and i started to ask em some Q's. at first they were quite nice
but in the end i heard i guy say " u americans u try so hard, why cant u just drive your own cars and stop destroying our cars! "
i think he ment "ricers"

what do u guys think about this subject
are we really tarnishing the Rep of the japanese?

no, there are ignorant people everywhere. There is no way a few people modifying their cars in ANY way could trash the reputation on a company. If you pee in your Starbucks coffee, does that make all starbuck bad? No, just your cup.
See, makes sense to me.

he probably does mean ricers, and yes, they do tend to tarnish everything, with both the american and japenese groups.

if you want to get right to it, japenese tuners tend to go "funtionality before looks"
while ricers tend to think "ugly stickers and APC mufflers before functionality"

yes, although anot all american tuners are distasteful, the "ricer" image is pretty prevalent else where, just like the fast and the furious humored domestic lovers.

Well I don't think that seems right. I've read in multiple places that the Japanese are now trying to duplicate what we do. So basically, they're imitating us, trying to imitate them. So are they ruining their own cars?

Mazdaspeed, RX-7.com, Mazdatrix, Racing Beat, lets reach a little, Pettit Racing and its world famous Banzai conversion, Roger Madavillem, Jim Downing, the list goes on of American based comanies and poeple that have poineered rotary tuning.

There are idiots everywhere. Try not to let what some street racer in Japan said to you bother you too much. How many people are there in Japan?

when that dude said "stop destroying our cars!" you should have said "well stop copying our rock music and destroying it!" :grinno:

joking aside, thats you heard just one statement from a small minded person. I know countless Asians that have moved to America that are extremely pleased with the tuner culture here. If the world were perfect, the love for autos would be a universal thing, and not limited to what nationality you are.

japan is about the size of california, and holds about half the population of the u.s.

on a side note, some of the nastiest rice i see around here is driven by asian people. i'm talking cut springs, no shocks, red body kits on primered cars, led exhaust, all on one car. there are stupids everywhere.

Hey... what are ricers? And with that in mind... what the hell is rice?

Hey... what are ricers? And with that in mind... what the hell is rice?

well rice is in a way just a matter of opinion, most people would say rice would be altezza tail lights, big decals down the side, huge rear wings, etc. but basically rice is making your car "show" and not "go"(full bodykit and altezza tail lights with a huge exhaust and no engine mods) or putting non-functional things on your car(like the huge rear wing since they don't offer any help unless your going over 100mph)

basically make your car faster before you make it look all extravagent, real "racers" will tell you do your engine, suspension, and tires first then worry about what your car looks like, I think thats one reason the flat black paintjob is in style in japan and in style among drifters in america, its kind of a way to say, my car is spraypainted but it will smoke you anyday of the week... atleast thats why I like it, I plan on doing the flatblack to my car this summer, that being one reason, and the other reason being I don't wanna waste money on a nice paintjob that I could use for handling or performance

hopefully that makes some sense, if I left something out someone please add on

ricers are people who eat the food rice...hence ricer. :evillol:

well ricers are to me basically people who are all show on the looks and no go on performance of the engine.

definition of ricers also comes down to personnal preference...i think. it may be rice to other people but its not rice to another person.

All rite, all rite... I got it. Cool explainations guys. Ya'll really cracked it down for me. All show and no go I see! Watta you call those with no show and no go?? You know like the ones with just the mufflers for the sound, but no engine mods no body work. They're ugly all over, possible dents, parts in different color, but has like 20 apc stickers on it in all different shapes and colors?? Those guys really annoy me... UGH! :banghead:

I think its just some guy who has national pride. thinkin that americans should own american cars and japanese should own japanese cars (even though both markets are almost no longer recognizable anymore). Americans are kinda the same. Also, if its a car i like, i couldn't care less where it came from.

wow, not a bad post for a noob :) and I agree, who cares where its from, unless its france, I hate france, little pussies(no offense to anyone that sfrench around here) :)

I would be offended, but i'm korean so it doesn't matter ;) cheers.

i get what that japenses dude was saying though. You ever compare street cars from Toyko vs LA?

they have the full-out race suspension, all purpose engine mods w/o much chrome to be seen, with small but effective wheels.

we got the Los Angeles special: half-assed paper mache body kit on a 91 crx, an APC (cough) (American Products Company) aluminum spoiler, and a large exhaust, a SPEEN (:D) cai. with a OMOM ('nother :D) seatbelt cover.

i hate the peugot. not that i have any real reason other than that i like the STi and the peugot seems to be beating it lately.

s14silvias14
01-14-2004, 12:39 PM
yeah. well at least straight from factory the STi is awesome, but everything for rally is done by the racing companies.

spirit r, that avatar is sweet, do they make badges like that? I'd love to have one, if not I want a rotory engine badge off of www.mazdatrix.com, then strip all the other badges and crap

spirit_r
01-14-2004, 07:54 PM
yeah they make those badges for obviously, the spirit r. the badge is about 2.5 to 3 inches high and it goes in the same spot where they put the 10th anniversary badges on th 88's (on the sides in front of the doors). you can buy them from any mazda dealer in japan, but good luck finding one out here. im sure some website has them somewhere.

i just wish the rx7 came back...no new body design, nothing different except maybe a more reliable motor. i think it would have a big impact.

I am Japanese, I go back and fourth every year to Osaka Japan. They are probably talking about the damn wanabe racers, with all the stickers. In Japan, real racers work on there performance before anything else. No one really drives civics or eclipses (eclipses are not made in Japan) that are supped up. If they want to go fast they go with GT-R's or Supras. So if your not a ricer or wanabe racer, I wouldn’t worry about it.

spirit_r
01-14-2004, 09:13 PM
i dont think that anyone is really worrying about it, more just in shock that they would say that. japanese are usually considered to be very polite. but then again, id be pissed off too if someone took something that i really enjoyed and turned it into something as retarded as what ricers do.

s14silvias14
01-14-2004, 11:03 PM
i could understand that. i actually hate it when someone takes a car and makes it up to be a racecar. though i can understand that its the only car they have and they work with what they have. But if the car you have wasnt made to be a racing car like the Supra, GT-R, Z, Silvia, Rx7, etc., then you shouldnt do anything to it. If you want to do something, then get a car that was made to do that. I get sick of seeing kids (mainly kids) in civics and integras and whatever else with huge wings and decals, and those stupid windshield washer lights and they pull up wanting to race some guy in a Camaro SS or Mustang Cobra and think they look awesome...First, do something to your car mechanically, then make it look nice because no one cares if you lose in style.

spirit_r
01-15-2004, 01:19 AM
the worst is when those ricer kids with their civics pull up to the camaro ss and when the light turns green they floor it but the camaro guy just laughs at them cuz their so pathetic and drives normally. then the ricers think they won and brag about how they just beat this shitty "american muscle". that happens all too often where i live. its almost funny how stupid they are, but at the same time you want to beat them over the head with largest, bluntest object you can find.

well, people in this situation generally base their opinions on extreme cases, and rice is extreme.
different people have different opinions of what rice is...either cheap tasteless styling, or useless performance mods to pose as something that it isn't, or just having a 4-banger from japan, the latter usually the views of the ignorant.
what that guy said in japan was prolly just him chirping over the tasteless body mod'ing and the pointless universal farting coffee can bolt-on...both loud and obnoxious in their own way. i wouldn't take what that guy said to heart, he was prolly some guy dreaming of becoming the next dori-dori :P
i think both areas, style and performance have their merits, and they complement each other.

s14silvias14
01-15-2004, 03:49 AM
there are cars made for style and there are cars made for performance. Ill put a dvd player and sound system in a Yukon Denali and take my 240 and make it perform better on the street. rice was just any asian made car. and now everyone uses it in these 'ricer' terms. i could care less about what it means, but proving a point that people should stop trying to do stupid stuff to their cars...especially the ones who waste time and money beefing up cheap cars with cheap parts and not waiting until they have enough money to do things right to a car thats actually worth it.
