200 grand am ignition and turn signal problemstenstrum 12-16-2003, 06:33 AM Problem #1: Sometimes I cannot get the key to turn in the ignition. I've got the brake pressed in and I've turned the steering wheel all the way back and forth, left to right, but the key will not turn. It will beep and knows the key is in the ignition, but will not turn. I've tried rocking the car back and forth, doesn't work. And then all of a sudden, the key will turn like nothing is wrong and my car starts fine. I bought the car used and the dealer told me that at one point, they had replace the ignition lock cylinder. Could the samething be wrong again? This sounds to me more like something in the linkage not letting go. Problem #2: My signal lights will sometimes not work. I can be driving down the road and use my turn signal, but they won't work. It seems to happen at random. Sometimes I can go a week without any problems and then have it happen 10 times in one day. If the signal lights won't work, I can get them to work by turning my emergency flashers on for a second and then cut them off. Kind of a giving a "bump" to the signal lights. They will fine for a while after "bumping" them and then at random, they will stop working again. My emergency flashers work every time I have tried them and they make my signal lights work when they aren't. Anybody have any clues as to whats wrong with my car?? I love driving it and hate having these stupid problems. I had the dealer fix it and they told me it was a faulty hazard light switch. I don't know how much this will cost, because mine was done under warranty Vikings2102 12-30-2003, 01:01 AM There is a recall on that hazard switch. It should not cost a thing. The recall will be made fully public in the 1st or 2nd quarter of 2004. pwrnxs 12-30-2003, 12:08 PM Your dealer was right about the ignition lock cylinder. What happens is the tumblers for the key / switch are stuck or will not turn properly. You can knock them loose after you've got your key in the ignition by hitting the key with a hammer like your driving a nail. It's a shame, but I just carry a rubber mallet in case it happens - cheaper than replacing the cylinder. And like the others said, the hazard switch will be recalled next year, but like me you probably don't want to wait that long to have properly functioning turn signals. You just need to replace the hazard switch. It's a snap - literally. You just need to use a screwdriver or something to pry the "Off / Acc / On / Start" cover from your ignition switch and then you can remove the center console cover in the same fashion. Pop out the old hazard switch and pop in the new one. The part number is 22642605 and it's $33 from your dealer or $20 from gmpartsdirect.com - but they have high shipping charges.
