Can you make a box in the spare tire well out of wood, or does it HAVE to be out of fiberglass? I know the spare tire well isn't round, but could you make a square box and set it in there? Has anyone done this? Anybody have pics or anything?

I don't know if it makes a difference, but a buddy of mine had a custom box made out of wood that just fit in his trunk. I don't think it makes a difference where you put it. So my answer is yes, but I'm no expert when it comes to stuff like this.

It is possible to make a MDF box in the well. 13secondcivic's sub was installed that way. I'm not sure what was done to ensure a tight seal though.

I've made probably 5 custom boxes out of wood, just never for the spare tire well, that's why I'm wondering. I know how it would sound and stuff, I just need to know if it's difficult and stuff like that. And I want to see pics of some that other people have done to get a good idea of how to go about doing it. Thanx though :)

im sure u COULD but considering the strange shape of most spare tire wells i would think itd be a lot easier to go fiberglass cuz u just lay it into the shape need, no measuring cutting fitting and sealing.

1. go buy all the parts (MDF, screws, silicone etc)
2. find a good clean area to work
3. measure your trunk
4. transfer measurements to wood
5. cut & assemble
6. install

Just build it my man :) :devil: grrrrr....I know how. I just want to look at some other installs before I do it so I can decide how I want my lay out and such. And I've searched ALL over sounddomain

Just DO it... Dont look, just DO... want an EASY way to do it? Measure the volume of the spare tire well, and if your woofer requires near that amount, just take a piece of MDF, cut the woofer hole, and silicone it OVER the well... presto... its that simple :) Of course when you goto take the "box" out you will have to chisel it off, but why would you wanna take it out? :devil:

Ok, I have a big spare tire well in my mazda, that's what I'm doing this in. But the thing is that I'm gonna be putting 2 15s in there, and I just wanted to see how people arranged theirs. I guess it's not a problem if I just measure and do it, but I dunno, I guess I'll just do it. Thanx

What 15" subwoofers?

And also, if its got a little too much air, if you have FAITH in yourself and your installing, you could just install the amp IN the well as well. Just make sure it is secure and wont rattle, then no one will see it... but if you dont have faith, or screw something up you will have to take one of the woofers out to get to the amp... :)

depends on the amp. some overheat easy (my kenwood 600, like having a heater in the car), some never seem to overheat (my power acoustik 420, 840, 1500)

Yup, its one of those things that everyone ASSUMES about audio... just like people ASSUME its bad to run the power wire and RCA cables down the same side of t he car. If PaulD were still here, me and him are probably the ONLY stronger supporters that will tell you this isnt bad with the right wiring :)
