I have a 98 intrigue. All of a sudden the security light comes on while driving. If you shut the car off, then start it again, the light will go out. This happened twice. Then while driving, the entire dash lit up. I immediately stopped the car, shut it off and restarted it again. On a little side note, we did have a remote starter put in, but that was a while ago, and we have been running the car for say two months without a problem from the remote install. HELP!!!

it could be a number of things. I too would not blame the remote start since it has been installed for a while although something could have come loose or something. My guess is that the BCM is going bad. You'll have to consult the dealer on this one.

I have a 99 intrigue with 3.8. My security light comes on periodically but then i know at some point in the near future she will not start. There is full power but absolutly nothing when ignition is turned. After 10 or 15 minutes she starts right up.Dealer put diagnostic on it and found nothing. It even acted up on the mechanic while he was looking at it and still couldnt find anything. Its starting to become a safety concern in that my wife drives the car and never knows when it will act up. Anyone else have this problem. Please reply

Interesting....my girlfriend's '98 is driving us crazy with similar behavior....just had Ungo (junk) remote starter replaced with CodeAlarm remote starter. The car wouldn't start with the Ungo; now it seems like it might be the new remote that's causing the problem. One of you said you had the exact same problem but didn't indicate if you have a remote starter or not....do you??

Attention all with this problem
I have the fix !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The problem is that we are all useing old keys that are worn out.
With the stupid pass lock system there is a sensor in the ingnithion switch that pickes up if the key is not right.
EVERY ONE THANK GM FOR BEING MORONS
If you use a key that is not a GM key (because of the way they cut them from the vin) you will have this problem.
Here is the fix ..........Replace the cilinder in the dash
They can set is so you still only have one key for doors and ignition
PLEASE WHEN YOU DO THIS THROW OUT ALL OLD KEYS AND GET A FULL SET OF NEW ONES FROM GM DEALER.... IF YOU DONT YOU WILL STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM IN A FEW MONTHS AND ITS $500 DOWN THE TOILET
Hope this helps I have done it and nock on wood its been 3 months since I have seen the stupid light on my dash.

Guys, sorry but I must have been sleeping when I posted above. What the problem is the decoder is going bad that connects to the cyl. lock. The only real fix is to replace the system.

As far as the keys going bad, there is no such thing. You can copy those keys to any generic key and the car will start. There are no codes inside the keys themselves. The code is inside the little black transponder that is attached to the cyl. lock. The only fix is to replace the system. GM isn't even very sure what the problem is here. The sad thing is that when a GM dealer calls into GM talking about this problem, GM asks if there is ANY aftermarket items installed in the car including remote starts!!!!

i have been having the security problems and do not have a remote starter installed. I am waiting to hear back from GM today. Hopefully i will get some resolve. I am using an aftermarket key because Mr Goodwrench told me he could not grind me a key at the dealer.Seems kinda odd to me. We'll see what happens.

I have had the same problem with my 98 Intrigue. (No remote starter) Spoke to a dealership and they said it was a problem they were aware of with Intrigues. They said the problem was almost certainly the ignition switch. Question, does anyone know the cost of an ignition switch and if a do-it-yourselfer can do the job.

If it's such a common problem, I wonder why GM hasn't had a recall on these cars? It sure makes me question the car's reliablility.

I've had a similar problem that has happened twice. I have a remote starter (by Ultra Alarms) that has a Passlock bypass. The only time that the Security light has come on is when I start the car with a key (which is more worn down than the spare metal key. So I've just shut it off and restarted it and if goes away. I just don't want the car to shut itself off on my way to work or school because it thinks that a bad key is in there.

But your problem sounds like the ignition switch is going bad.

I'm going to start using the spare key for a while and see if that corrects the problem. This morning it would not start with my regular (original/worn) key but it did start with the spare key after about 15 minutes. Seems like there is a time delay once the car doesn't start.
I'll keep this forum posted on my problem.

I've been using the spare key for about 2 months now and the problem has not recurred.

I had this same problem with a 99 Intrigue and I was getting full power but no start and became a regular occurence. I replaced the ignition switch and USED my same lock cylinder. Cleared my OBDII and I haven't had a problem since. This was about 8-9 months ago. Still using same keys as well.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with my 99 Intrigue. It ended up costing me 600 dollars for a new ignition module. This seems to be a GM defect in all late model GM cars with the passlock system. I have spoke with GM and they will do nothing about it. Everyone that has expierienced this problem should go here http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/complain/results.cfm File a complaint. The people there tell me that there havent been enough complaints to warrant an investigation but if they do receive enough they will follow through.Maybe we can all get some of our cash back. Feel free to pass this on to all GM car owners you know.
