Fuel Pump Whining

I noticed what I think is my fuel pump whining. The noise appears to be coming from the tank area. I've owned the truck 2 1/2 yrs and just noticed this yesterday. Is this an indication that it's going out? thanks

A noisey fuel pump is not normal.....the noisey pump could last 5 minutes or 5 years.

The fuel pump on my truck has had an intermittent whine ever since I've owned it, and the truck now has 300,000k ( 200,000 miles) on it and I'm surprised the pump still works at all !!! ( probably shouldn't have said that !! )
The only problem I'm having is once in a while when I'm running at freeway speed and semi-coasting (not pulling like uphill) the truck stutters, like its having some kind of fuel or igniton problem, I haven't been able to figure it out yet, anyone out there have any ideas ?
Regular maintenance has kept this rig running well, only brakes, a water pump, and a couple of front end parts have been replaced, oh yeah and three sets of tires !!!
I will always keep this truck !!!

Sometimes if the fuel filter is restricted it will create some backpressure on the pump. Try changing the filter and see if that quietens the pump down, if not atleast you will have a clean filter. Keep me informed. :evillol:

Yep, have changed the outlet filter on mine probably a half dozen times over the years, but this weekend I'm going to change the pump as I think I'm running on borrowed time, and thats not exactly an easy roadside repair !!
The pump has a pretty delicate inlet strainer, I'm real curious to see what kind of condition thats still in after 200,000 miles !
Possibly the noise is related to orientation of this strainer, or if it was flattened a bit when originally installed.

Had my pump changed out last week. The dealer wanted $775 parts and labor. My mobile mechanic did it for $80 plus the parts. Day by day it got louder so I knew it was going. Pumps changed and it's quiet again.

Changed the fuel pump this past weekend, all nice and quiet now, sump strainer was discolored but looked to be still pretty clean for that kind of mileage, and the inside of the tank was spotless, I replaced the strainer with the new one anyways as Carter says they won't honor the pump warranty if you don't, and that sounds fair to me. Also changed the coil to try and make the stutter while coasting at highway speed go away but it didn't.
I suspect its in need of wires and plugs, cap and rotor, etc. at any rate.

Had a noisy fuel pump in my 98 Sierra at 47000 miles. Don't know if filter was ever changed. I changed it and now the pump is quiet.. Art
