Why did Honda Discontinue the Del Sol?SolReaver 04-11-2001, 10:23 PM Why? Was it not selling, Honda couldn't afford to keep making them? What? knoxie411 04-21-2001, 10:12 PM I think it was the cupholders that did it....:) Dunno really, could have been competition from the slightly older miata(dunno why though), maybe insurance rates, or the lack of interested buyers at the time. In my opinion, its a great car and never should have been taken off the production line. Its appeals to lots of people from what ive heard. Really dont know why it was discontinued though.......... SolReaver 04-22-2001, 08:05 AM Hey knoxie411 do you own a Sol? I don't but hope to in the near future. SolReaver 04-22-2001, 08:22 AM Oh ya welcome to Automotive Forums, always wanted to say that :D knoxie411 04-22-2001, 02:14 PM Thanks for the welcome. Yeah i have one of the few sols remaining on the road. But I like being the guy with the car no one else has. I live in Minnesota and have prolly only seen like 20 of them in the 3 years i can remember(two of the are owned by my neighbor across the street.) SolReaver, if you can get you hands on a VTEC Sol, i think youd be pretty satisfied with it. Its also a Honda which means mods if your in that sort of thing:D enzo@af 04-22-2001, 02:58 PM There are lots of them around here. I could easily see 20 in a day if I just drove around for awhile. I love them, and I wish Honda would have kept them going. knoxie411 04-22-2001, 07:40 PM I do live in a place which only allows you to have the top off like 3-5 months of the year, and the snow sorta discourages small, lightweight, manual 2 seaters when it falls:) Heep 04-25-2001, 09:33 PM There a quite a few here in New Brunswick, I see maybe 30 or 40 in a year. Guy that lives in my suburb has a nicely (not riced, although most probly like that in the Honda forum (there goes me stereotyping again :D)) modified one, black, slighty lowered, nice wheels, etc. SolReaver 04-28-2001, 12:41 PM Man Heep 30 to 40 a year, I'm lucky if I see 6 down here in Mississippi. :( enzo@af 04-28-2001, 01:39 PM man, you guys should move to Oregon. they're all over. Racing Rice 09-07-2001, 01:33 PM Originally posted by enzo@af man, you guys should move to Oregon. they're all over. Ohio too.. They are all over.. everywhere you look you bound to see at least one.. I dont get alot of things that honda Does.. Take the SI for instance... SI starts as a Hatch for many years stays that way.. then gone.. then its a coupe.. then gone(kinda)... Now its going to be a hatch again.. Honda kinda makes the delsol in a way.. just majorly restyled, beefed up, and high priced.. Its called the S2000. Im probably going to take some heat for that but thats ok.. I wish they still made the delsol too, but like all good things it must come to an end sooner or later.. Arioch 12-03-2001, 11:02 AM i'm not sure why honda discontinued the del sol. i love mine! i also don't see too many around here in milwaukee. i like that too! i'd reccomend a VTEC del sol (b16a engine - same as the civic si) to anyone! -dave drift 12-03-2001, 02:40 PM they were discontinued due to poor sales. unfortunately, the "Civic" moniker it originally had doomed it to "economy car" status. making it a two seater with very little trunk space made it impractical for the ONLY people who could afford insurance on it... middle aged families. with the del sol now becoming older, insurance is now within the ranges of the youthful. blatch 12-30-2001, 11:55 AM miata was fr where the del sol was ff. personaly i'd rather have a little bitch car that i could drift in. delsolguy 12-30-2001, 12:06 PM Yeah but at least the Sol has some room inside of it. And a decent trunk. And a top that doesn't allow tons of noise to creep into the cramped hole which is the interior of a Miata. Oh and did I mention that the Sol is faster? CivSiGuy 12-30-2001, 12:26 PM Well since it was based on the 5th gen chassis, it had to phase out sooner or later since the 6th gen Civics had already began. It was a great try at a specialty car like the Miata is, however the Miata was too classic for people to pass up and the delSol got lost in the mix. brads94accord 01-01-2002, 09:31 PM Originally posted by drift they were discontinued due to poor sales. unfortunately, the "Civic" moniker it originally had doomed it to "economy car" status. making it a two seater with very little trunk space made it impractical for the ONLY people who could afford insurance on it... middle aged families. with the del sol now becoming older, insurance is now within the ranges of the youthful. hey drift i dunno about the trunk space thing cause my friends sol has a huge trunk, its almost as big as the one in my accord. but the insurance thing was a factor. s2Ksol 01-01-2002, 10:17 PM The Miata was one reason. The sol was overshadowed by the Miata with all the hype it received from the media/buyers. I remember when the Miata was introduced that Mazada dealerships could get a least 5k-10k over the sticker for them, because of there popularity and demand. Then when Honda introduced the sol here in the US, many media/print outlets like Car and Driver, Motorweek, etc. all gave the sol moderate to poor ratings for handling/power for the 93 models. Then in 94 when Honda introduce the DOHC VTEC with more power and with better suspension(sway bars/strut bar), then the media/print took notice to the improvements and gave a better rating for it. I use to have a 94 sol MPEG ratings video from Motorweek that praised the improvements, but I believe you can ask around on other boards that someone might have it, like darksol. Even with better ratings in 94 couldn't help the first impression that many buyers got from the year before from critics. I also remember reading something about consumers didn't care for the targa top versus a convertible like the Miata. Some crap about the difficulty of removing the top and putting it in the trunk that turned people off. Whatever. Blair 95 VTEC dejoux 01-02-2002, 07:02 AM Apparently the boot is 1 cubic foot less than a 5G civic coupe which i think is pretty impressive, its the biggest ive ever seen on a 2 seater. Even with the motor for the roof in there its more than big enough for my needs. I think its a very under rated car. Its always dismissed as just a targa top like a 300ZX or MR2 but its alot more than that fakirone 01-04-2002, 12:00 PM [QUOTE]Originally posted by Racing Rice [B] Honda kinda makes the delsol in a way.. just majorly restyled, beefed up, and high priced..
