Ok, allow me to rephrase my 88 Lincoln's tranny problem. What happens is, when I hit 40, the tranny disengages and I'm forced to downshift into 2nd to continue.

Sounds like a broken friction disk or band.
What symptoms brought about this problem?
Has the car ever worked normally?
Have you ever changed the trans fluid?

Thanks, TC: No symptoms, I just bought the car for very cheap and it was like that. The fluid has been changed.

hey nemgos,
I had a similar problem, in overdrive my car would shift outta 2nd at like 45 mph and goof around before slamming into 3rd. I figured out it was b/c my car with 100k miles hasn't ever had the tranny fluid changed, the old fluild gunked up my servos or whatever and they didn't put enough pressure on my clutch, friction disk burned up, and now even with new fluid my tranny is screwed. From what I understand it was past the point of no return before I even boughht it last summer.

Now OD barely moves my car, but in normal Drive mode it runs almost normal, so try cruising around in drive to see if that helps.
