What's wrong w/ fuel guage?

I hope someone has fixed this problem before and can guide me through the process.... Fill tank of gas and the fuel guage is at FULL, drive for a couple days then fuel guage gets to HALF, and here's the problem, keep driving and the fuel guage starts to work it's way back up to FULL ?! So as I keep track of this I know that when it gets back to FULL tank, in reality it is empty. I have forgotten about this and was left on the road with no gas! Any suggestions before I go ahead and drop the tank? Thanks in advance........'97 Chevy S10 Blazer 4.3L V6 Vortec

Most likely the fuel level sender is bad. Have replaced many for this problem.
You will have to drop the tank.

Will this fix my guage too? Then again, the speedometer is inop but the odometer works. Dashboard lights inop too. Is there a common point to look at?

Mine does something similar where it could be at any level... step on the gass and it drops like a quarter of a tank and clowly creeps back up... that's normal though.

On a 97 everything is on one assy (pump, sending unit, etc)- yes it all will be fixed. Retail is about $540 just for the part - if the mechanoc does it - you may find one for $420 if you do it youself.

Same issue with my 2000 S-10 Blazer. Could this be a precursor to the fuel pump just giving out? Please help!! I'm thinking of taking it on a 400 mile trip this August and need to figure out if I should get it replaced before I go or just leave it alone and put gas in it ever 300 miles like I've been doing for three weeks. Thanks

Unfortunately, you're stuck with having to replace the fuel pump,which has the sending unit as an integral part of it. Keep your receipt if you do, and register here;
See this link http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=218281

GM/Chevy is well aware of this problem, but they refuse to do anything about it.

I just submitted a complaint to the NHTSA from the link above. My trip OD is still working so I just put gas in the tank every 300 miles or so, hope that doesn't go next. I'll stick it out until the pump stops working I guess. I've owned 4 other GM/Chevy vehicles; an 86 Cavalier, 89 Blazer, 94 Jimmy and my current 2000 Blazer. I’ve had to replace the fuel pump in all three of the trucks. Don't think I'll be getting a Chevy or GM product next time round. I'll most likely go with a Toyota Highlander or a Hyundai Santa Fa. To hell with GM!! : :cya:

Level sender went bad in my 97, there is a kit out from Chevrolet that will replace the sender only, about a hundred bucks though. Check dealer for a TSB on this, will have part numbers for your vehicle.

My Chevy dealer is saying that I need to replace the entire pump, and that there's no kit for just the sender. Do you have any more info in the sending kit? :1zhelp:

I'm reading this and hate to say that starting this last weekend my fuel gauge jumped beyond full when I know the tank was nearly empty. I turned the Blazer off and the needle jumped slowly around for a few seconds until it finally came to rest where it should have been. (on empty) I have since put some fuel in it, but I do not trust the accuracy of the gauge anymore. By the way folks, here is a very useful web site to check on any recalls that might by on your Blazer. In fact it cover vituraly every year, make and model of current cars, as well as going back 30 plus years. www.recall-warnings.com

don't alwasy assume it's your fuel pump...i have a 99 tahoe with the same problem and everyone and their mom said it was the fuel sending unit which is a part of the fuel pump...yeah they have kits out there to repair just the sending unit but if you have the pump out, you might as well replace it (just my opinion) but in my case it was not the pump/fuel sending unit. i bought a pump from auto zone for $201.00 ($498.00 at the dealership) and i installed it myself ($400.00 for install at the dealership)...but it didn't fix my problem...turns out that i have a wiring issue with either the ground or the needle itself...i'm taking it in to an electrical shop tomorrow...so my suggestion is "don't always assume, and get the hard evidence"
