Does the 323 have anything to do with the GLC? If so, what?

The GLC is identical to the 323, except they changed the name for the North American market (GLC = Great Little Car, or something cheesy like that)

In most other markets it's called either the Familia/Astina or just plain 323, altho in South Africa they call it the Sting.

Oh, and if you've ever seen a Ford Laser, its pretty much a rebadged and restyled 323.
