Hi, I Just bought a 1999 intrugue with 3.5 with 29 k miles with lower end knock, said it was a rod bearing(I haven't received car yet. ) I see a pattern of high oil consumption ,but I haven't seen any cases of premature rod bearing failure. I have no history on car ,but know it is clean as a pin, including the engine. I just wonder if the bearing failure is a direct result of prior owner, being unaware of this problem and unknowly running car low on oil. Can anyone tell me if the rod (and) (or) main bearing can be changed in car? thanks so much for your help Jim G

I know nothing about rod or bearing problems on this engine, but I have heard oil consumption concerns voiced repeatedly on the internet boards. I wonder how many people realize that the 3.5L has a crankcase capacity of 6 quarts? I highly doubt that running 1 quart low (even all the time) would cause bottom end problems in 29k miles unless the car was used for oval racing or something strange.
