After running on the highway, shut it down and feel various areas of the radiator. It should be hot all over, if not then the radiator is plugged. Also try turning the heat on full when you are driving. If the temp falls then the radiator is plugged. 338000 Mi huh, it is just a young pup...

Hi,
My 91 4cyl has the same problem. Runs normal temp around town, but when I get up on the interstat on a warm day the temp goes up. If the incline on the interstate is 2+ miles long and the day is around 90deg my temp gague will go all the way into the red. I have changed the hoses (thought my lower could be collapsing), thermostat, and flushed all with out sucess. All I can think of is the radiator is partualy bolcked of the h2o pump is worn. As my 91 has this problem at only 55,000 miles maby it is not somthing worn out but just a poor design??
Good luck

I have a 87 but it came with a clutch fan if. If you do have a clutch fan then it needs to be replaced, also check the water pump it could have a bad seal and at high crusing it is not pumpin the coolant that you need.
