Hypertech Power Progammer III and Thermostats.

Hello all. I just purchased a Hypertech Power Progammer III. Reading through the manual, I saw where a 180 degree thermostat was recommended.

I have two questions:

#1. My truck: (2002 Sierra 5.3L 4X4 Ext. Cab.) Did my truck come from the factory with a 180 thermostat or was it something different? If different, what is it rated at?

#2. If it is not rated at 180 degrees, do I really NEED to buy it to use it properly with the Hypertech Power Progammer III?

I'm a newbie...I could use all the help I can get.

Yes You Haft To Have It,the Colder Temp. Tells The Computer To Do Something Differant, like Advance Your Timing

Stock thrmostat is either a 190 or 210.....required to allow the engine to warm to operating temp quickly for emissions considerations.

The Hypertec chip alters your ignition advance curve; it increases the maximum advance under wide open throttle (WOT) conditions (one of the ways it makes the claimed HP increases). It will also alter the fuel mixture under these conditions also (richening the mixture to increase HP). In order for this to be done without causing detonation (pinging) the engine must run cooler. Also, you will no doubt be required to run either premium or mid-grade fuel to support the more aggressive total advance.

IMHO, for purely street driven vehicles, these chips are not worth the money they cost. The only time they are affecting the engine directly is during WOT operations....and how often do you drive under those conditions? Yes, they *will* increase total HP; the peak HP rating found near the redline under WOT conditions. During "normal" driving conditions they do absolutely nothing to affect the engine. Why?...because they have to meet the same standards for Federal/CARB emissions as the factory chip. The only "loophole" in emissions standards is under WOT (this is considered an emergency or maximum performance mode) because it does not occur very often in the usual operation of the vehicle. If you have a computer controlled trans, then the chip can alter the shift points, delay OD and lock-up functions to give a "seat of the pants" feeling of more power.

You can get a minor improvement in overall performance by simply replacing the stock thermostat with a cooler rated one....the overall engine temp is cooler and therefore can receive slightly more advance....all done by the stock computer chip and for a lot less moolah. The biggest bang for the buck improvements on computer controlled engines are intake and exhaust flow improvements.

I would recommend a Volant Cool Air intake. It is said to be the only true cold air intake available. It is sold by stylinconcepts.com
