Hey, Ray. Like X-ray or ray gun. Why is it suppose to hurt someone? But let's talk about hurt. Those of us that have been screwed, myself included on five cars, have been hurt. Everytime another "breaker of the rules" selfishly gets his car in not caring what his screw-ball antics do to others, it hurts. Financially. And there are thousands who have been hurt. Yes, thousands. Plus the taxpayers. But I'll leave that alone.

The F1 could have been done differently where EPA was concerned. Offers were made. But other choices where made. It doesn't surprise me that now it comes back to bite them in the ...

You and others critizise me on this, terrorism, etc. The apathy is abundant. "As long as I get my car in, so what." philosophy is why the world is the way it is.

Anyway, I'm outta here, off to der Motherland for some real driving.

Who are you calling Ray? If you are referring to me you are sadly mistaken my friend. In fact, if you ever make it out here to California, I'd be happy to meet you in person to dispell any myths you might have about me. I have nothing to hide...

You can bring along your 550 Maranello (in your suitcase), and I'll bring mine:

http://www.diecast18.com/pictures/mstFerrMananUp.jpg

:uhoh: :grinno:

= = = = =

Can there truly be a 'crime' if there is no 'victim'?

That's why it has to "hurt"...

Here's another life lesson for you "Nice guys sometimes finish last." You played by the rules and it apparently didn't work out for you. Others bent the rules and it worked for them.

Yes, this is the way the world is (it has been for longer than you and I have occupied space on it) so I doubt you are going to change things anytime soon.

Enjoy your trip. I'll miss your diatribes and you'll have to live without my banter in return. ;)

gerdI am not aware of any waviers for the Elise or the Saleen S7. The older Elise is illegal.

Yep, true, except when Sun international put a honda B18C engine in the back. The old elise with it's rover engine had emissions that were too dirty. The new Fed elise has a toyota engine.

The Fed elise has got waivers for it's bumpers - US lemonlaws stop any manufacturer selling a car that can't pass a 5 (or so?)mph bump test without significant damage... and the elise can't do that in it's current form.

Here's the waiver if you'd like to read it: http://www.sandsmuseum.com/cars/elise/information/technical/waiver2004.html

Interesting Register of F1's thread guys! - FWIW I saw that Phil Collins' manager had one a few years back (same as genesis' manager?). I think it was dark blue.

Except, I don't think those Elises were truly legal here in the USA even with the different engines from Honda - there are F20C swaps (orig S2000 motor) out there as well. I recall an article on the Sun International Elise where the owner of Sun International was quoted as saying something like - If a customer wants to know all the in's and out's of how it's legal, then that probably isn't the right customer for them.

Tony Smith is that man - the chassis number is #020 (we used to suspect it was #002 :uhoh: ) - and the car appears to be dark grey in color. Here's two shots of it.

I thought that he was also the Genesis manager, but it appears that 'Tony Smith' was know more commonly as Tony Stratton Smith, and he passed away in 1987. I can only assume that the two might somehow be related given the circumstances of the association with Phil and the similarity in their name, but I haven't found evidence of that yet. Strange, the kind of info you learn on the paths of research of McLaren F1 sometimes. :)

Not trying to cause this thread to drift more than it already has but I don't know of any F20 honda conversions for the elise: there's no tranny suitable. There are plenty of B18C (old intergra) and K20/K20A/K20A2 (Civic Type-R) conversions running around though.

The photos I saw were from a newspaper in Scotland years ago - close up with flash as it was dark outside. I suspect that might be the reason why it looked blue to me? (perhaps underneath it all the car is blue even?)

It's ok - I had my wires crossed a bit. This company - www.prototyperacing.com - developed a kit for the Elise to drop in the K20A engine/transmission, but in their kit, the K20A is apparently tuned to make 240hp - or the same power as the F20C.

If the photos were taken outside, a lot of times you'll pick up some of the blue from the sky in the reflection of the paint. You can see the same thing happening in the two photos I posted. An interesting note is that #020 was originally finished in "018 1994, 17th car built, Midnight Blue Pearl", but in close up photos I have seen of it in the past two years, it has always appeared to be black or very dark grey in color.

:bigthumb: That's probably the best description of the colour.

Today I had the incredible fortune of spotting a McLaren F1. At first I thought my eyes decieved me! But it was a McLaren. What a startling sight. The odd part is that I live in a town of 2500 people about twenty miles north of Medford OR. It was about 11:00 am on a Saturday morning (today) we has headed into town, I was headed out. I have confirmed a Diablo owner in Shady Cove (where I live) but never expected to encounter a McLaren. Anybody have any ideas about who this car belongs to. It appeared to be a deep blue or purple car.

XP4 would have been the 4th prototype, however I doubt that's the car you saw.

If you in fact did see a McLaren F1, then you saw one of about 25 cars that are here in the USA now. I have a feeling that it might have been some other car - like an Ultima or Noble or maybe even a Saleen, but that is just my guess. A car in that color, and with the wing that you mention seeing is not known to be in the USA.

the car I saw was either a mclaren or a knock off. it was not a noble or a saleen it was a mclaren. it looked exactly like the one in mini magics picture. it was deep blue or purple and had a spoiler. I am a neophyte here, but an avid auto enthusiast. I specificaly looked for the badge on the left rear of the car, it was a mclaren. It is possible it was a knock off mclaren kit car if such a car is offered, that I am not aware of.

Interesting....

Was this car plated? If so, what state? There are almost no HDF Kitted F1s here in the USA, so it's really hard to say. Wyclef's F1 is the color you mention, but he doesn't have the wing you describe. XP4 wouldn't have the wing either. I'm also not familiar with any F1s being located in that area. The hard part about keeping track of these cars is that any new owner is free to change the car to suit their tastes, so you could have seen a car we know about that has been refitted by the factory.

I'd say try to keep a camera handy and maybe you will get lucky and see it again. To date, I have never seen a credible example of a McLaren F1 reproduction.

BTW: The McLaren badge on an F1 is on the right rear. ;)

Well than, it's not XP4.

Can you post some pictures of a car with a comparable color to the McLaren you saw.

Maybe that will help.

looks different to me... but as mentioned.. could have been repainted retrimmed and had spoler (and lip?) added.....

ooohhh can anyone remember seeing how the mirrors changed in development? might XP4 have had the other location? i think it was on the front pillar....

XP4 has the earlier production mirrors taken from the Citroen CX and used on various other exotics (Lotus, Aston, XJ220) but they are not high mounted - they're in the same position as the standard production mirrors.

Just saw Tony Smith (owner of 020) on the TV. He was taken part in the thourghbred grand prix series and says he made his money managing genesis and phil collins. He's not a relation of Tony Stratton Smith. Didn't catch what old F1 car he was drving, bet it was a McLaren though :) .

This is a very old thread and has some outdated info, and some stuff is missing. We are aware of all three of Meisner's F1s. His road car is a chassis #051 - a '96 car painted green. His short tailed GTR is #11R, a '96-spec GTR that competed in the BPR Global GT series and at LeMans under the Frank Muller sponsorship. His longtail GTR wears the Schnitzer Team BMW Motorsports/FINA livery. I don't recall the chassis number off the top of my head, but could figure it out if I were home.

Atkinson's F1 is burgundy in color, and is chassis #061. I wasn't aware that he resided in Sweden though. I thought he was a Brit?

Anywho - welcome aboard. We're always pleased to take on another fan of the F1 in our ranks.
