What alternators have you been using? How many miles? I have a 99 and when my alternator decides to go, I will probably buy an aftermarket high output version. What did your transmission cost you? No answers, just questions.

The altenator cost me almost $400. It didn't actually go out-just was acting up when it was cold out. I was driving a long trip, alone, at night and noticed the headlights dimming down and sometimes clear out, radio cutting out and static alot, dash light dimming down and out at times, car started missing bad. The dealership put a new alt. in claiming olds made a specific alt for the intrigue for only 2 years and it was very pricy and they don't carry it in stock. It's hard to put in You have to tilt the motor. I got an alt for $50 from a junk yard. It was doing the same thing. I am now on the 3rd alt. and haven't driven it much in the cold due to the trans which is costing around $1,600 plus labor. The car is still broke down. Arguing with olds. They refuse to fix it.

The alternator that was installed by your GM dealer is covered under a lifetime warranty. If the part fails, GM will replace it at no charge to you if you show proof that itwas purchased and installed by a GM dealer

Head light flicker is a problem on almost all Intrigues. My headlights also flicker when it is cold out. I live in Houston, so only a couple days a year. What I recall the latest excuse is that the air pump cycles, causing the lights to dim. I have heard of people letting their car warm up for five minutes or so prior to driving, which does not actually fix the problem. As far as the tranny goes, I find it very easy to drive my car hard. I love the performance of the "shortstar" engine, as I've heard it called. I would probably have it replaced and get a warranty and not worry about it again. Do a search on alternators. Lots of choices out there. Let us know how this turns out.

As I posted in the other alternator thread, the REAL reason your alt sucks:

There is a TSB out for this problem. The alternator regulator is faulty and sensitive to vibrations, esp. in cold weather. You can have the regulator replaced to fix, but the TSB also recommends replacing the whole alternator as well because it might be damaged or something, I don't remember exactly what it said. I called GM about it because my GFs Intrigue was 2k out of warranty and I finally convinced them to split the cost with her, total was $600 (cost to us was $300). They weren't too happy about the fact that I had the TSB in hand :)

If I can find the TSB online I will post a link. But any good parts shop will have a database, too. That's how I found out actually, from the local parts shop.

DO NOT let them replace it with the same alternator, or you will just have the same problem. They fixed it in production sometime in 2001.

I read this thread with great interest. I have an 02 Impala LS with the same "flashing lights" symptoms. GM and the dealer are telling me it's "normal" and blame it on the air pump.

Do you have any other details that might help me convince the dealer that there really is a problem here? I haven't had any luck finding the specific TSB you mention. At this point, I'd even settle for just replacing the regulator myself, if I could be sure of buying the correct, updated part.

Thanks very much for any info!

I have a 1999 Olds Intrigue GL. The OEM alternator finally died and was replaced with a Bosch unit. It cost about $150 and solved the headlight flickering, "yahtzee" noise from the ABS computer and interior light flickers. I also used to have a problem with the climate control not functioning correctly. All of these problems are gone. E-mail me (at) josh0411 (at) hotmail (dot) com, with Oldsmobile question in the subject line if you have questions. Good luck.

Hey guys,

It just so happens I'm in the middle of replacing my alternator in my 2000 intrigue. I have had no problems but saw that problems were occuring with the alternators on the 99-00 intrigues. Anyway, my dad has his own business rebuilding alternators and starters so e took it to his shop today to replace the regulator in it. In his books it shows the TSB and the fix is a new style regulator. I have also found some sites also indicating this.

Like I said, I didn't have any problems with it but I was having problems with what I believe to be the thermostat. My temp gauge was sometimes creeping really close to the hot position at speeds of 50 or below in cold weather. Anyway, I found out there were others with this same problem and they redesigned the thermostat. So I looked around and found a site confirming this and giving me the new part number, so I went to the dealer and bought it. Well, thats when I decided to fix the alternator because if you want to replace you alternator you have to remove the thermostat housing, so why take the chance of having to take that back off later to service the alternator if something were to happen.

SO, below are the couple of sites I found. One of which gives very good steps of replaceing both of these items. Very simple to do in my opinion but I like working on cars and have the tools to do so. Nothing special is required to change these things though. Also, you don't need to tilt the motor or anything.

If you want to take this job on, and need some more details, e-mail me.

Also, if your interested in getting you alternator fixed for a very cheap price, you can visit my dads website. If you call, ask for Randy he can tell you more about it. http://www.geocities.com/remanufactured_parts_company/
