Does anyone know how much difference it makes if you trash the airbox . and just replace it with a K&N cone? what would you do with the sensor that plugs in the airbox?

dont get rid of you airbox, you hollow out the air box and modify it, there is no reason that you should put a new air intake on it. I'll take pictures this week of how to do it and then post it. then everyone will know how to modify the air box and put more performance in your car.

Bullet's right. Gutting the stock airbox added low end torque and now it just rolls out to 3k rpm so easily. Pre-mod, car did'nt want to move until half throttle. Garnes on GM Forums said dyno tests with K&N panel filter only showed more power after 5500 rpm. Not worth the $60 to me(plus their cleaning fluid and oil). I go with new Fram every 4 months. Slightly more noise from half to full throttle and when pulling hills. That nice V-8 waaah. I love it. Wife hates it.

ok this is the first part of your air box mod, were there is blank space there used to be a white plastic piece covering the whole inside. you want to take that out. im sure you can figure it out easily its not hard.

this is what you do next, this piece you need to take out of the location its in. where the hole is there was a silencer you want to take that piece out. toss it or save it what ever you want. but the hole it was it you need to make bigger preferable as big as the hole that is on the frame. use a sawzaw or something of that nature, I couldn't find mine so I had to break my fingers using a hacksaw to make the hole bigger, that didn't work as a i wanted it too.
once you get both of those steps you can put the box back together, then to the next step.

This is the hole where another silencer goes, Im sure you've all seen it, but I didnt' want it there anymore, and I didnt' want to leave an empty hole because I was sucking up dirt and all kinds of stuff, so I took a cap from a model spray paint can and put it in its place, i had to force it a little bit in ther but it went in and well I have no probs. so thats what I would suggest, one its black and not that noticable so... but there ya go, thats how I did mine and wow can i tell a difference.

I used a common 2" black PVC pipe cap with a thick bead of black RTV inside then pushed it on. It fits over the whole thing, seals, and looks like a small baffle or something.

Hey guys, a few months ago I did a cone filter mod in my "96" and I thought it was great.
Today I did this mod that silverbullets talking about.
And I'll tell you there is an unbelievable difference!!!! My car pulls so much nicer and quicker off the line. Defintitely more low end torque
That cone job I had on it was junk lol
I performed this mod in a matter of minutes. Its sweet!! everyone should do this

If you guys who have done this modification wouldn't mind would you look at this and tell me if i'm on track. Also does the chamber i'm pointing to come out also? Who else broke the little cover over the sensor getting that white piece out? lol

The piece that you are pointing to does come out. You can stuff a PVC pipe cap in there and clamp it down and you're set. I put the flat side in to keep it smooth. I think 2" is the correct size as stated by Indy8.

I went with the 1 1\4 pvc cap on mine (96) cut it off to fit flush inside and out had to paint it flat black as they only had white here.Looks clean with nothing hanging out. Sounds so much better at FT sounds like a V-8 should now just need to modify the exhaust.

what if i put some sheet metal in between my new intake w/ k n cone and the fan will that cut down on the heat wash that the car would be getting

You'll want to close it in completely from the engine compart. leaving intake from the fender

Go to Home Depot (or similar store) and get a pipe roof flashing kit. It's made of a heavy plastic or rubber. Make a template of the fender section, cut the hole to a tight fit around you intake pipe, and put it in place. Use a couple of self-tapping screws to secure it and your set. Complete isolation from the hot air of the engine compartment. I've seen this done on a Grand Prix and it turned out great!

Be sure and not to forget the handsome hand grenade look where that air chamber used to go..

Anyone have any ideas of what I can use to make better clasps on the side of my filter box that the dealer broke? Also i'm probably going to put some weather stripping around all the holes I made to reduce the engin compartment air from being sucked in..
