Oil filter wrench for 2000 Intrigue

OK, so I have read that a special wrench is needed to get the cap off of the housing that holds the cartridge-type filter on the intrigue.

Exactly what type of wrench is this?
I have seen the oil filter wrenches at autozone and other places...the kind you can attach to a ratchet. But those seem like they are made to go onto the end of a normal canister-type, screw on filter.

If anyone has a wrench that works, could you please share where you purchased it and what the part or model number is?

Thanks!

This was posted in an Oldsmobile newsgroup:

You will need an 80 mm end cap style oil filter "wrench" with 15 flutes. This is the type that snaps onto a 3/8" ratchet. This wrench allows you take off the access cap for the filter element.

Well, after measuring the filter canister top and getting 2 3/4 inches, I went to buy a wrench. They are not measured in Inches, they use MM. There were three that were real close to the one I needed and one other that seemed a little big. 1) 73mm 14 fluke....2) 74/76mm 15 fluke......and 3) 75/77mm 15 fluke....there was an 80mm also. I bought the 73mm 14 fluke because I thought I remembered it having even sides. When I tried it, it was too small, so then I counted flukes and looked in the owners manual, which doesn't help at all. 15 flukes.....so I came in and looked on the internet where I seen the reference for the 80mm. Went back and swapped the wrenches but the 80 is too big. I am not sure which one is right, either 2 or 3 above. Either would probably work since they are so close! Just want to save someone the trouble i am going through.

I use a Flotool #4 Super Graphite filter wrench purchased at my local auto parts store (Kragen) for $6, works great, attaches to a 3/8” drive ratchet. Pennzoil makes a similar metal filter wrench. I assume it is also #4 size (which would make it p/n 19804).

FYI, you can remove the filter without draining the oil first. Also, factory spec for oil filter tightening is 18 ft-lb, and oil drain plug is 15 ft-lb.

Yeah, that's a great attachment to have; we've got one for the Intrepid.

I wish the Olds dealer knew those torque ratings; the last time my oil was done, I had to get a new drain plug since the mechanic tightened it so much that it stripped the threads on the plug. :shakehead

I know what you mean, I have a major trust issue letting anyone work on my cars. I went out and bought a new inch/lb torque wrench (http://www.automotiveforums.com/#) for working on my aluminum 3.5L engine. I torque everything, including the oil pan drain plug and filter. By the way, my car had the improper drain plug in it. The proper one from GM (88891787), has a recess under the head of the bolt to accomodate the rubber seal (3536966).

I bought the GM filter wrench (Kent-Moore J-29142) or SPX is the name on the invoice. Let me know if you want the phone numbers to place an order.

Dumb question. What is the correct size oil filter cap wrench I will need for the 3.5 motor? I have several that don't fit and my local Walmart only had one of the sizes I already had. Tried a band type wrench without any luck. Will Autozone have one for it? I want change it (oil) myself so I can switch to Mobil 1. Almost $10 for a filter at Walmart, hope it works better than a $4 screw on one used on every other car.

it's 75mm (3" american?). it's exposed so once you get under tehre.

http://www.howardm.net/dred98/oilchange.php (http://www.howardm.net/dred98/oilchange.php) has a write up on the oil change. it's about as easy as oil changed get. mobile 1 synthetic is good. a regular change will require about 7 letres to re-fil.

I couldn't find at any parts stores, might be because the people working were idiots and couldn't understand it might be different. http://www.oldsmobileforums.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif

In case anyone else is looking, I found out from the Intrigue site that the correct cap wrench is 74 mm with 15 flutes. You can't use one with multiple sizes since there is only so much filter to grab. I got mine thru www.autoparts.com for $10 delivered and it fits perfectly. Its a RiteFit brand part #A258, in case you have better luck finding it locally than I did (price was only $1.60 but they added a lot of shipping$).
