I'm currently trying to replace the idler arm and pitman arm on my 1989 S15 Jimmy. According to the repair manuals, I need a steering linkage puller to separate the idler arm from the relay rod, and the same for the pitman arm for the relay rod.

Unfortunately I have not been able to find any information on this tool, and the local auto tool dealers have never heard of such a thing. The manual says this is GM part number J-24319-01.

The URL below shows the directions for the idler arm removal and installation. Step 5 on the idler arm removal is where I'm stuck at.

Any information you have on this tool would be greatly appreciated. Particularly, is there something common I can use in its place, and if not, where can I find one. Thanks in advance!

The puller you want is a Pitman puller. In Canada, I've seen two types: fixed jaw and adjustable jaw (more expensive). This was at a "Princess Auto" store. Most automotive stores sell them though. However, you should find that a two leg gear puller will work. Some pullers are only supplied with a pointed nose. If so, use a nut over the point to keep the nose on the ball stud.

A word of warning: use the puller CAREFULLY when separating the arm/ball joint. Increase the pressure SLOWLY ( half turn, pause, half turn, pause ) the joint can separate suddenly and too much pressure will cause puller and joint to fly about once separation occurs. Leave the ball joint nut on, but backed off a bit to stop the joint and arm separating explosively. Watch your hands and eyes, play safe, wear gloves and safety glasses.

Have fun !
