Help! loud screeching sound that stops when I disconnect batterywildemart 09-23-2003, 01:49 PM Hi, my alternater died recently, I was able to replace it but now there is a loud screeching sound every time I turn my car on. I found that the sound stops when I disconnect the battery and leave the car running but when I re-connect the battery the sound comes right back on. I also found that if I just leave the car running for long enought the noise will eventually stop on its own and the car appears to run prefectly. Any suggestions on what might be going on and how to stop the noise? Thank you sr20de4evr 09-23-2003, 11:30 PM ok this guess is way the hell out there.... Is it possible that your alternator belt is loose? When you first start the car the starter drains some power from the battery, then once you're up and running the alternator has to keep the engine running and charge the battery at the same time. This extra drain to charge the battery would put a larger load on the alternator pulley, and if the belt is somewhat loose to being with it could put it over the top and make it start slipping. Then when the battery is fully charged there is less load on the alternator and the belt stops slipping. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
