I got my xterra with 23,000 miles on It,Ihave taken It to the dealer twice once they found the right manifold cracked so they replaced It.
I got the vehicle back and I still here some lifter noise???
From what I hear the lifters are Hydrallic, most chevys, I have had once they pumped up went quiet...But the Nissan dosent seem to quiet down till after it Is warm! I have had a new oil change and put the napa gold filter onand they still made the noise...,the dealer says this Is common and If I went out and started a new one It would do the same
They did say a couple of them were kinda loose, but they said that It would cause no harm....Can Anyone out their give me feedback on the lifter noise????? I did ask the dealer to go to a heavier oil instead of the 5/30 but they said It would starve It for power...I have been thinking about going to synthetic oil for the start up protection....

Mobil One Synthetic oil very good across the boards. Use either a Nissan or a Wixx filter. X engines ARE noisy at start up. Nothing you can do about it, they give a little bit of a rattle when ya turn em over.

Look a bit more into these forums, I believe the FAQ even has something about it, and you'll see that Nissan manifolds are notorius for being good to the dealership as ..well...they suck an break alot.

every xterra i've heard all make lifter noise at startup. its normal but only if it last less than 10 seconds. full synthetic oils are more expensive but they do help with the noise. from what i've heard heavier weight oils are bad.
if the "clicking" sound last longer then a few seconds or becomes louder under accerlation, then your manifold is toast.

No worries. My Xterra has had noisy lifters since I bought it several years ago. I have a 2000 with the 3.3 VG33E. The dealer told me it was normal for the noise and also for the rough idle. While the noise seems to have gotten louder over the years the engine is still very strong and I have 174,000 miles now. Engine still runs like new, but I wish I could say the same thing about the transmission. I can tell you that I switched to 10W30 weight for the summer months and there does seem to be a difference in power. The engine seems more sluggish. I think I am going to switch back to 5w30. I can say that I would not recommend switching to synthetic in the VG33E. I did it when I bought the vehicle and it started consuming oil immediately. I took it back to Nissan and they told me to take the synthetic out and switch back to convetional. I did this as soon as I got home and the oil consumption stopped. I don't know the reasons why, but that is what happened. All I can say is that of all the vehicles I have owned, this has been one of the best, aside from the rediculous fuel consumption (12 mpg!).

I just noticed that. The last post was in 2003. I wasn't paying attention when I posted it. And no, I have not checked the tire pressure of the spare.
