I'm head over heels in love with my 1996 Cartier. Still less than 45k miles on her, looks and runs great.

I havn't considered any modifications, although I've read of many !!

One I may consider in an attempt to get better air flow would be to modify my air box (bottom side) to allow more air to get through.
I''m reading this gives more engine power, but I'm more interested in a possible MPG improvment. I'm getting 17~19 city driving now.

One catch is that the air flow also makes the engine louder, whiich I'm not interested in.

That's all I have so far....

I've heard that cleaning out the EGR systems DRamatically improves power, mileage, etc.

Also, the K&N Air filters are known to improve air flow, which intern improves mileage, and power.
One thing to note with K&N, the filtering element is LIGHTLY coated with a LITE oil in order to function... If the cleaning and re-oiling is done incorrectly with too much oil coated on it...It can clog some sensor passages and lead to more problems. Don't over-oil it and It'll be fine.

use a 9" k&n cone filter, about 50 bucks, a really good investment. As for exhaust, you can run dual if you dont have it already, and use some dynamax super turbo mufflers, quiet sound, and about 40-45 a muffler.

All at Autozone

Fuel filter, unknown brand $5.99

Air Filter, STP $4.99

As for exhaust, I like the stock setup. I don't want to listen to the constant drone of exhaust, sure it will flow better and give you a minute increase in power. But I like things quiet.

:)

P.S. The K&N filter may be good but I have my reservations about the oil that makes it better. It can mess with the MAF and cause your car to run rough. My friends all swear by them. I would to if I had a Carbed vehicle, but I refuse to put any of these "reusable filters" in my fuel injected vehicles. Just my :2cents:

On the boards that I visit, many say that they get 6 hp with no figures to back it up. On one paticular board some had a Mustang GT on a dynometer and decided to see what real figures they could get from a K&N, get ready cause it's a shocker

0 hp gain! :lol2:

My 89 had badly rusted out exhaust, and I wanted to replace it with flowmaster true-duals. Since I don't have the money for that right now I just cut my exhaust off at the cat coverters, and ran piping back over my axle and out right behind the right rear wheel. With no muffler or resonator, it sounds pretty cool. The single piping doesn't allow it to be too loud, but you still get that gurgly muscle car sound. It was like $50 worth of pipe and couplers, and a *respectable* chrome tip

btw, it doesn't sound sloppy like the honda shopping carts do when kids saw off the exhaust.

I have an 89 also, and i was just getting ready to look into a dual exhaust for it. I, unlike many others, want a very muscley sound to the car, and intend to have the loudest lincoln in my town. Also my 302 is getting ready to be put to pasture (previous owner didnt take care of it) so I need an exhaust set up that will work with the 351c i plan on putting in it.
