The engine makes a knocking sound when idleing. Not sure if it sounds like valves or what. Can i add something to quiet the noise? It only has 50K miles.

is it a knocking or more like a loud tick?
anyway--just got rid of a plmouth voyager that had the same problem...after the knocking in the engine, it started leaking oil and my brother let me know that it was the rods knocking and if it wasn't fixed right away, it would lead to wayyy more problems.
Be sure it's not leaking oil...
Just thought I would let you know my "experience" with engine knocking...

some cars like my fathers subaru forester with the sports package knocks a little while idling, and the guys at the subaru shop told us it is because of the high compression vacumm that the cylinders create in the intake. so the knocking sound is the air being compressed in and out of the chamber.

Is this knocking when engine is cold only or all the time (hot or cold). If it is only at start up cold this is normal for these engines and is piston slap. Once piston warms up and expands noise should go away. Without going to deep these engines have a short skirt and close tolerances and once heated go from oval to round and stop slapping the cylinder walls. If it is all the time then it is something possibly worse, such as lifter, cam, rod problem but without hearing it I can not say. Again if it is when cold don't worry about it, engine will last forever. Have 3 vans, all knock cold, one has 325000 KM other has 225000 KM and other has 170000KM and all knocked at low KM's. Good luck.

I'll second the knock while cold no concern, mine has done it for years. Goes away after its warmed up and I'm at 195,000 miles.

If it makes you feel better, you can put Lucas in at oil change. It may or may not help, but wont hurt it. Lucas is a very good oil treatment product.
