rear-light warning signal and reverse lights up on brake 1993 Camry LE V6

I have a 1993 Camry LE V6 with 68,000 miles on it. The rear-light warning light is constantly on on the dashboard near the speedometer. The rear lights were just replaced and they are definately working right. I have checked the lights many times and they are properly in place. I think this same problem has happened a few years ago and when I took it to the dealership, they fixed it for $200. I am not looking to spend that much money on what could be a simple repair. Also, another problem with this car is that each time the brake pedal is pressed, the reverse light lights up. (The "R" light under "P" between the speedometer and the RPM meter) (futher clarification: By "reverse light" I am not talking about the tailight, I am talking about the orange "R" that should light up when I shift to reverse).

If anyone knows the solution to either of these problems, it would be greatly appreciated. If anyone needs any photos I can take some.

my 94 camry had the identical problem. it turned out to be a bad wire in the rear harness were the cable coming from the trunk lid goes into the main rear harness. strip all the tape/plastic/etc off the trunk harness were it meets the rear main harness. strip the rear main harness back toward the back seat about 3 to 4 inches to allow enough wire to make a new splice. with the backup lights on (gear selector in R and the key turned on), wiggle the two wires associated with the backup lights (Red w/black stripe and White w/black stripe) until you can determine which one is the problem. this area of the harness takes all the bending force when the trunk lid is opened and closed.

Are you sure the third (center) brake light is working?

Hey Patmanj20,

What was the fix for this problem on your Camry? Was it the wiring in the trunk lid harness like danchevy said?

I have the same exact trouble symtoms with my 92' Camry V6 LXE. The backup lights don't work and the "R" lights up on the dash when I step on the brake.

You most likely have a broken wire (or several) in the trunk harness. Open the trunk, on the left side near the hinge there will be a wiring harness right next to the trunk release cable. Use a razor blade or small knife to cut open the harness. There will be 6 or seven wires in the harness. I am sure that you will find a broken wire in there somewhere. Make the appropriate repairs. Any more info needed, email me at cignasak@comcast.net

Thanks Erndog, right on the money, like danchevy said. Broken wire in the harness where the trunk lid wires met the main harness. The wire that was broken was the white/black stripe wire going to the backup lights.

Great forum for information!

Thanks guys

It possible that a wiring problem may be the cause, but that wasn't the case for my problem. I had the same problem of no backup lights on my 94 Camry LE. Problem was cause by the park/neutral switch that is located on the transmittion. It can be easily removed from the front of the car. Manual suggest to work from it from below. But removing the battery and loosening the plate under the battery allow you to get to the switch which is below the battery. Electrical plug along with two bolts, plus a large nut on the shaft of the switch (plus the cable that bolts to the arm of the shaft) is all that is holding this switch. After removing the switch I found it to be hard to turn, plus it failed continuity checks. Five screws hold the switch together. Removing these screw and open the switch I found it to be stuck with very old electrical greese that broke down to a stichy mess. Removed the greese, clean the contacts (the armature has two copper brushes that are spring loaded that were stuck from all of the old greese). Applied new greese, closed up switch, install switch, and everything works good!!! I doubt that if you brought this in to a shop that they would take the time to clean the switch. (It alot cheeper you clean the switch yourself. I think they dealer parts department was quoting a new switch as $250.00 !!!):smokin:
