Cold Air

Is there a cold air intake made for the cougar/t bird with the 4.6L? I havent found one, but the intake for the 4.6L mustang looks like it would drop right in. same engine orientation and all, so would that work? The engine is the same between both t birds and the stang including the sensors and what not right? before i start to buy parts i just wanted to be sure. I have my eye on FRPP Heads and intake to start, and kooks headers to start my full exhaust. My car has the AOD, does anyone know how to beef one of these up? I saw the manual valve body in a previous thread, I want it. Any recomendations?

Amazing things can be done with dryer exhaust duct from Lowes', Home Depot, etc.

I have yet to see a dedicated system for the T-Birds/Cougars, but you may be right about the ones for the Mustang, depending on what year your vehicle is. '94/'95 used a different intake manifold than 96/97, and the latter is almost identical to that of the Mustang. Therefore, if you have a '96/'97 4.6, chances are it might work. See if you can get your hands on a stock intake plenum from a Mustang of the same year, and try that out before you buy. If it fits, you're golden. Good luck.

couple people have replaced the "violin case", as it's sometimes called, with the intake from a Civic. honestly. it's not a cold air intake, but it will flow the air better.

OK..the last time I posted something completely slipped my mind. There IS a cold air kit for these cars, but I'm not sure it entails exactly what you are looking for. It DOES NOT replace a single thing under the hood. Instead, what it does is eliminate the panel filter in the stock airbox and uses a plastic adapter and cone filter that mount underneath the airbox where the resonator box hangs. I am not sure how much of an improvement this would make, as the surface area of the cone filter would have to be significantly more than that of a panel filter to effectually outflow it. I've got a K&N panel filter in my airbox, and have removed the resonator. It still pulls cold air, and sounds freakin' awesome. Finally, if you're going to do any custom mods, don't forget to find a spot for the Intake Air Temperature Sensor that's located towards the rear of the airbox next to the MAF. I've been told that you can mount it in one of the holes on the inside of the fender, where the air will be about the same temperature as that in the intake. I, personally, would not do that...but if it makes your life easier, go for it. Hope this helps.

P.S. Here's a link to that kit

This is not a cold intake unit out of the box but can be with a little moding. K&N has a nice bolt on FIPK unit for the T-birds that mounts with all the stock mounts and even has a heat sheild if you keep it stock. http://www.knfilters.com/kits.htm Good luck.

yea, but IIRC, it's about $100. you're better off going to home depot and buying some pvc tube.

^^ there, make you're own.

Just so you know, a lot of MAF manufacturers do not recommend a cold air setup that has a bend right before the meter. Supposedly, it creates turbulence that does not allow the meter to function properly. Also, unless you drill your own boss, there is nowhere to put the IAT sensor that normally screws into the back of the airbox. Keep this in mind if you don't like to took at a "Service Engine Soon" light.

Working on getting a Densecharger created for the first time for the 4.6L SOHC. This will be the complete cold air intake setup from the TB to the air box. Keeping inmind that the airbox will need to be removed along with the air silencer. When the kit is created and a price known I will post all the information here. Can't believe others haven't went to manufactors and asked for one to be made by now. Oh well. I will get back to you guys and or gals on this.

Drive it like you stole it and care for it like there is no other.

what im doing with my thunderbird is using a k&n cone filter with the mass air flow sensor right behind it so that it gets a decent reading and using large pvc pipe to run it up.
Also you might want to get a performance mass air flow sensor for your tbird that helps without even putting an air intake on. one for a mustang 4.6 might work but the main difference with it is the computer. you can check with your local parts store and that might have the mass air flow sensor also i would take off the silencer check sccoa.com for insructions

I live in Florida. Haha during the day this time of year, it's 95+, not to mention how hot the road makes the air. My engine knocks if you just touch the gas pedal. I'm changing the plugsand cleaning the fuel injectors, but at night when everything cools off, it doesn't do it. It has a stock air intake.

This thread is so old ... 08-12-2003 ... I hope you found out that you can use Mustang air intakes.
