Ok, I can't figure out where this sound comes from, but it doesn't come from driving over a pothole, or over a speed bump. Sounds like it's coming from the suspension (shock?). Prelude is stock, no mods. Has anyone else experienced such an issue?? :(

Yes this issue has been addressed many times before...This problem is covered under warranty...The problem i believe was the bushings...Just take the car to Honda and they should replace it...There was a note that went out to all the Honda dealerships addressing this issue.

It's a common problem with 4g and 5g preludes, often known as "shock knock". There are two seperate "Technical Service Bulletins" that Honda has published about it: TSB #99-084 and TSB#00-090. Make sure your dealer reads both before working on the problem.

Images of those TSB's can be found here:

A self-cure for those out of warranty can be found here:

I had it on the right side ('98 SH), and the dealer was very happy to replace both the spring and damper collar in one go. Fixed it immediately.

Good luck!

I had the same problem on my 4th gen. After taking the suspension apart A FEW times I finally replaced the strut. Problem solved!

It was a pretty strange klunk sound and the strut was nice and tight when I took it out. Must have been a bad valve in there that acted up on certain bumps in the road. Drove me nuts for about 6 months.

Finally sold it for my Maxima!
