Turbo on Galant GSXJ4Y5iN 07-31-2003, 11:44 AM My question is this. I am building a turbo motor for my GGSX; however, I still have not gotten a straight answer as to how strong the stock drivetrain is. Also, does anyone know if I would be able to put a DSM tranny in with the stock rear end or would/ could I change that, too? Thanks in advance. -Jaysin RockinWRX 08-01-2003, 02:02 PM Dunno why you'd want to. The Galant GSX tranny is the exact same as the GVR4 tranny. And it also has the turbo flywheel. The GVR4 tranny is the preferred swap for DSMer's , because of the taller 1st gear. The rear end is only a 3-bolt , so you may wanna change that to a 4-bolt. I'm also planning on changing my hubs to 5 lug. 4 lugs is no good for drag-racing , IMO. J4Y5iN 08-01-2003, 08:16 PM Are you absolutly sure about that? I would think being an NA it would have different gear ratios, but if you're 100% that's cool. I'd like that to be true. I'd like that to be true. One thing about the Galant GSX's is they use the NT 4G63 , but with a 5 spd only. There are no Galant GSX auto's. Normally DSM's have 2 different tranys from the T to the NT cars , even in manual , but not in this case. The NT flywheels are bigger and heavier than the Turbo flywheels , you can tell by the bellhousing size. The Galant's were made in Japan , not the US , so they got all the same stuff as the VR4's , including the tranny , with some minor noteable exceptions. No Active ECS (suspension) and no AWS. But everything else is the same. I've driven both a 1st gen Eclipse and of course my own Galant , back to back , and I know for certain the GSX's tranny has a higher first gear. Its good to almost 20 mph , while the shorter geared Eclipse tranny is barely good to 10. See where you redline at in first gear , and if you've ever driven a 1G , you'll know what I mean. To my knowledge , and I've done some research , the GGSX was not a "variant" of the GVR4 , but rather just a non-turbo counterpart with all the same stuff installed. Its only the American versions that wasted time with installing weaker trannys in NT cars , Mitsubishi Japan had no such hangups. It makes more sense tooling and production cost-wise also , something American manufacturers have no clue about. Sorry for the tirade , but I'm absolutely sure the GVR4 and the GGSX have the same tranny. :bigthumb: J4Y5iN 08-04-2003, 09:04 AM That's great, man. Thanks a lot. The Galant GSX has a different final ratio. You will kill your rear diff if you put in a Galant VR-4 or DSM tranny in. http://www.vfaq.com/mods/Trannies.html for more info. and RockinWRX, why are 5 lugs better for drag racing? I don't understand the logic behind that. drew Galant VR-4 #872/1000 And yes, I'm 100% sure about the tranny/ratios. turbowop 09-02-2003, 11:17 PM Lol...hahahahah.....oh no, only four lugs.....I hope my wheels don't fall off. Back in the early 90's when Mitsu rallied the gvr4 they used the same four lug hubs. Worked fine for them....works fine for me. And a Shep-built DSM tranny with the the double synchros and the taller GVR4 1st gear. Don't really want an open diff back there for drag racing. And 5 lugs are stronger than 4. Everybody knows that. I'm switching my front and rear hubs to DSM 5-bolts. Only Honda's run 4-bolt. :loser: GVR4DREW 09-04-2003, 12:27 AM Well whatever , I was planning on using a DSM LSD rear anyway. That ain't cool, trying to play it off as if it wasn't any thing. Anyways, none of the 11 sec galants run 5 lug hubs. I have 5 lug hubs on my GVR4, but only because I had the parts lying around, and not because I needed the extra lug to hold a rim on. Oh BTW, RX7s, and 240SXes also ran 4 lug hubs. turbowop 09-04-2003, 01:04 AM The only reason I would ever switch to five lug hubs is because it's easier to find wheels wider than 7.5" in that bolt pattern. Most wheels using a four bolt pattern only come in widths up to 7.5" which limits how wide a tire you can run. It has nothing to do with strength, but I'm sure Rockinfucktard has other reasons. RockinWRX 09-04-2003, 01:20 AM The only reason I would ever switch to five lug hubs is because it's easier to find wheels wider than 7.5" in that bolt pattern. For instance the S14 Silvias come with 5-lug hubs , and most tuners choose to swap those in. S13's came with 4 lug , typically. Its is a lot stronger than 4 lug hubs , and the extra margin of safety if one breaks during a hard launch or extreme cornering. Maybe you guys need to read SCC or Turbo or Super Street and get a clue how the real tunerz do things. I so hate backyard mechanics that don't have a clue. :smooch: turbowop 09-04-2003, 01:39 AM How about you shove your five lug hubs up your ass. Guys do the swap for more brake options and wheel options...not for strength. Something else will break long before the lugs do dumbass. I pull consistent 1.7 60' times at the track and don't have any problems whatsoever with my four bolt hubs. If anything an axle would go first. You're so ignorant it's not even funny. Read SCC, Super Street or Turbo?! Are these your so called "factory repair manuals" you've been spouting BS information from. Even in SCC when doing the five lug swap on their "project silvia" it was for the option to install 300zx brakes..not because they were worried about a wheel falling off because of one less lug. You do realize now that you have proven yourself a complete tool on this site throughout all these BS posts and threads you've written and nobody is going to listen to you. :thefinger With every post you write you only make it worse on yourself..... Damm , you can only get a 1.7 60 foot time. I grab 1.5's in my WAGON all the time. And its pretty close to stock. Oh yeah , and 5-lug hubs. :loser: And I have factory manuals for a few cars , guess that what happens when you are a real tuner. Plus I subscribe to all 3 mags I mentioned , so I don't get left behind like you obviously have. How many times did you get left back in 2nd grade? :shakehead So far the only tools I've met on this site has been the GVR4 crew. Guess I'm not hangin with you rejects anytime soon. I wouldn't soil my image by doing so. So when I'm running 10's , I won't be claiming membership in your sorry little .org. Funny how Ive never seen it mentioned in the DSM.org clubs , of which I am a member. All the GVR4 guys here are members of the local DSM club. So I guess your little .org is not a recognized body. Which makes you all :loser: Don't worry , I'm not posting in this thread anymore. Don't wanna get my hands dirty. I didn't think so. And let me tell you something about being left behind......that would be YOU trying to chase my car. You come back now when you're running 10's alright. I gladly invite you because I'm sure without a doubt that will never happen. 4WD-Open 09-04-2003, 04:50 AM Damm , you can only get a 1.7 60 foot time. I grab 1.5's in my WAGON all the time. Even a moderator who closed your other useless garbage said that. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=131782&goto=newpost When will you get a clue ? You really do need to reevaluate yourself and see that you are as ignorant as everyone else says you are. Everything you have said can be proven wrong by almost 1500 GVR4 owners on the GVR4 board. Why must you be so disrespectful in insinuating that the GalantVR4.org site is not a respected forum ? It is a respected forum deticated to the correctness of its information about the Galant VR-4. You are just some teen idiot who makes the rest of us car oners look bad. Please place the penis back in your mouth and stop yacking. boysetsfire 09-05-2003, 06:59 AM You should call up easy street motorsports and tell them how you can get a 1.5 60ft in your stock wagon since they get that in their drag wrx with drag tires and 700+ horsepower. they could probably get a .5 60ft with your technique, that'd be awesome. -Marc JBTT 04-01-2004, 08:24 PM didnt know that an auto GSX was made myself--but Just bought one (91w/leather/sunroof/-looks like Vr4 inside---am wondering if the tranywould stand up to a strong turbo 4g63--looks as if the rest is the same) does anyone know if the brakes (gsx) are the same as a vr4????for parts for my wife's 91 vr4 --vote Part out or killer driver JBTT One thing about the Galant GSX's is they use the NT 4G63 , but with a 5 spd only. The trans and rear diff on the galant gsx and galant vr4 are not the same. GGSX = w5m31-2 trans, final ratio = 5.208 GVR4 = w5m33-2 trans, final ratio = 4.933 The rear diffs necessarily are different because the transfer case ratios are the same (1.090). The GVR4 rear diff is 3.545. Don't recall what the GGSX rear diff ratio is. I bought a 90 GGSX that somebody had installed a talon rear diff in. Because the front and rear axles were not the same ratio, it cooked the front viscous coupling, then the bearings on the shaft. BTW, the front rotors on the ggsx are smaller than the gvr4 by about an inch. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2010, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
