When I put the key on the security light comes on and the car will not start some times it takes up to 30 minutes to start. Some other times I have to leave it for a few hours.

Either you have a bad key or the key cylinder has broken wires inside of the column. If you know how to use a meter you can test the system.

First remove the lower hush panel, find the main wiring harness coming from the column. Unplug the connector by loosening the 7MM bolt. Find the 2 white wires side by side on the ends of the connector, should have an orange casing around the white wires. Take your meter go across the wires while rotating the key. and titling the column in different positions see if the circuit goes open on you.

If you want to by-pass the system without changing the cylinder this can be done also.

How do you by-pass the system without changing the cylinder?
