Hi

I own a 1996 chev cavalier. When I turn on the fan switch, it only works on setting 4 but not on 1,2 and 3. What wrong with it? Can I fix this myself? Is it expensive?

My 96 G20 has same issue, fixed with the following solution, Good Luck!

The climate control system has 4 speed settings. The 4th setting allows the blower to run at the motor's full speed. However, for the first 3 settings a resistor is needed to get the proper motor speed. The resistor effectively reduces the current fed to the motor making it run at slower speeds.

The blower motor resistor tends to have a high failure rate. When the resistor goes bad the fan will only operate on the 4th setting. This is a fairly common problem with an inexpensive, easy fix. The resistor can be purchased from a Nissan dealer at a retail price of $24.83 (there are sources of OEM parts at prices below retail). The part number is 27150-2M105.

To replace the resistor look behind the glove box next to the blower fan. Two phillips screws will need to be removed and the old resistor can be removed and the new one plugged in. This repair doesn't require removing any other parts from the car to access the resistor.
