2001 Pontiac Aztek Gear Shift

Reciently I purchased an Aztek, but have a slight problem. I was wondering if anyone could help me with it.
The position of the gear shift handle jabbs into the side of my leg making for quite an uncomfortable drive.
Is there anyway that I can adjust the position of the gear shift handle, or modify it in some way to lower the height of it? Perhaps cut down the shaft length?
If so can someone give me hints on how to do this?

hmm, cutting it might be dangerous, how about making it a bit taller? that would be easier.

I'm a big boy, and yeah, the shifter was a pain in my side... I replaced it with a chrome plated skull shifter that is designed for automatics. It has an ugly little button on the top of its head... come to think of it... did they get that from a Bugs Bunny cartoon?
