99 Blazer burning up alternators

I have a 1999 Blazer LT 4x4 4.3L ...My OEM alternator went out late one night and drove on several batteries I purchased to get to my destination. I picked up an alternator and it fixed my problem for about 2 hours, leaving me stranded again. Back to the batteries. I find another store about 2 hours a way that has an alternator so I buy that one. I drove for another 2 hours or so and the blasted thing burns up again.

Any suggestions?

The alternator was not designed to charge a discharged battery.
If you installed a new alternator and did not take the time to charge your battery back to full charge, the alternator most likely overheated and pretty much self destructed.
Charge the battery, replace the alternator and you should be in good shape.
Have a reliable technician check your charging system just to be on the safe side.
Good Luck

Thanks for the reply. As I was thinking last night after i replaced the alternator for the 3rd time, I realized that it wasn't fully charging. The battery wasn't completely dead, more or less 3/4 dead, so I let it run w/o any accessories or air or anything on, and it seems to be working fine now.

Thanks!

So a dead battery will eat a alternator?

Thats a new one on me. :D

I have a 79 el camino, and a ac delco battery that has hardly ever had a green light. After 2 days, it's dead. Im gonna take it back and get it pro rated, because it's a 72 month battery, and it's only been over a year.
