Hi guys,
I have a 1988 ford ranger xlt 4x4 auto tranny v-6 with a 2.9 liter engine.
I cant get the waterpump fan blades off. The pin is threaded.
Do any of you know how to fix this problem? can I do it myself or do I have to take it to a garage for special tooling?
Thanks guys,
I need my ride as soon as possible, not to rush you or anything, but a girls gotta go!

Hi on your ranger the fan is a thread type fan clutch. Meaning it threads on the front of the waterpump. to remove the fan off the waterpump you have to either have the speacial tools to hold the waterpump pulley from moving while you turn the fan clutch hub to the right or clockwise. well most of us dont have the special tools and wont buy the tools to remove it just once. so i use a good size cresent wrench and fit it to the fan cluthc hub. then with a hammer hit the wrench so it would turn the fan clutch clockwise. Its better if the fan belts are on but you might have to find a way to hold the waterpump pulley from turning so you can brake the fan loose. Hope this helps

I use a rubber strap wrench around the water pump pulley to hold it. Then I use a box end wrench on the fan shaft. It has a left hand thread.....meaning it is the opposite of a normal bolt thread. In this case it is lefty-tighty, righty-loosie. Ford did this because the backside side of the belt runs the water pump...it is reverse rotation.
